Marvel’s superhero film, Avengers: Endgame, has broken plenty of records on its way to being one of the biggest cinema releases of all time.

But it is likely to fall short of the box-office takings of a couple of major films.

It passed Avatar over the weekend to become the second highest-grossing film of all time in the United States, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Avengers:

Endgame has now made US$771 million in the US, but is unlikely to surpass Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made US$936 million.

Yet after adjusting for inflation, the latest Marvel film is not even in the top 20 biggest films in the US – yet. By the end of its run in cinemas, it will probably move up a few places on that adjusted list.

But for now, 21 films are ahead of it when adjusting domestic grosses for ticket-price inflation.  Avengers: Endgame is also the second-biggest film of all time worldwide, behind James Cameron’s Avatar. It has grossed US$2.6 billion globally – Avatar grossed US$2.8 billion – and it is unclear whether it can catch up.

However, after adjusting for inflation, it would be almost impossible. It’s difficult to calculate worldwide box-office inflation, but a rough estimate puts Avatar at about US$3.3 billion worldwide.

Below are the 21 films ahead of Avengers: Endgame at the US box office after adjusting for inflation, based on figures from Box Office Mojo.
