Alternative country singer/songwriter Brad Butcher in his own words was "late to the game" when he started down his path to a career in music. "I played sport growing up and got a trade and did those things... When I finally realised what I wanted to do with my life I was almost 30..." Brad is proof that you can start your music career later in life, and still be successful. He describes the catalyst for his career change as "realising that I really didn't like my current job, and then playing a couple of gigs and getting that buzz - when you get that response from a crowd off an original song - nothing compares to that." We talk to Brad about this realisation, his recent touring and a whole lot more...
Having just released his second record, Jamestown, Brad says the response has been good so far: "People have been warm and receptive and you can't ask for anything more than that". When we asked him what we should expect from the release, he told us what he aims to do when he creates music: "What I try do in every song is write a lyric everyone can relate to, something that's touching and honest."
Brad also let us in on what it's been like recording: "We definitely worked on our tracks in the studio... there were a few key changes that were made with the intros and the breakdowns... You take all that in while you're there and do your best to make the songs as best as you can."
With so much planned over the coming weeks with touring, we asked about the differences between solo shows and being supported by a band. Brad said: "For the solo gigs I try to get everyone to relax, have a beer, it's a storytelling kind of night but with the band it's more like let's get up and dance". In terms of what's next for Brad Butcher, lots of things, by the sound of it: "In the next few months there's another ten or so shows coming up... we're even looking at getting up to Darwin and over to Perth." He's also working on new material: "I've got three quarters of another album written and working on that already. I can't help myself, I caught the bug..."
Jonestown is out now.
