A pop icon, businesswoman, adoring grandmother and now radiating on the cover of the Good Housekeeping July issue, Lulu proves there is no end to her boundless energy and drive. In an exclusive interview with Good Housekeeping the 65-year-old talks openly about relationships, the benefits of getting older, style secrets and her love of dancing to hip hop.

On dating:

‘I’m not looking for it but I’m not averse to having a relationship.’

On putting up barriers when meeting men:

‘Yes, I definitely put up walls. Maybe it’s because I’ve had so much sadness and pain around being married and divorced twice. Maybe a part of me doesn’t want to go there. I think it would take a lot of effort and concentration to have a relationship – it’s got to be a full-time job.’

On feeling at peace now:

‘For now but anything can change. My life has taken on many changes, ups and downs, a lot of sadness, happiness, success and discontent. I haven’t got it sorted.’

On being a relaxed grandmother:

‘I’m not worried about my grandchildren the way I was about my son, Jordan. I don’t think I was an easy, relaxed mother – on top of that I wasn’t always available, as I was always working. I would have liked to have more children but I didn’t, so being a grandmother to Bella, four, and Ted, who is nearly two, is a gift my son and daughter-in-law have given me. I’m more relaxed than I used to be – it’s part of being older.’

On her secret love of hip hop:

‘I love dancing to hip hop music. The days of going on the treadmill are over.’

On ageing:

‘It’s not for the faint-hearted! It’s tough addressing your health all the time – thank you God I don’t have any problems. My body’s getting older, but inside I’m not as old.’

On the benefits of getting older:

‘I’m more comfortable in my skin. Although I tried not to show it, I always felt I wasn’t pretty. Everyone I seemed to hang out with in the Sixties was gorgeous, and I would compare myself to them. Today I don’t compare myself as much. It’s hard work. I am very opinionated so it is hard for me.’

On her wardrobe essentials for every woman:

‘First and foremost, a good bra! Your bust shouldn’t be too high or too low.’
