Tensions mount in Venezuela following opposition leader's call to oust Maduro
  • 5 years ago
We start in Venezuela this morning.
Tensions are escalating in the South American country after opposition leader and National Assembly President Juan Guaido called on the military to topple the socialist government of Nicolas Maduro.
He not only demanded transition but also the reconstruction of the country and to recover national sovereignty,... summoning thousands of people to the streets.
Anti-government demonstrators clashed with troops... with armored military vehicles ramming into the protesters in the capital city of Caracas.
Venezuela's health services say dozens of people have been injured by rubber bullets, tear gas and live ammunition across the country.
The Maduro-controlled authorities said they were deactivating an attempted coup by a small group of (quote) "treacherous" soldiers.
