The Forest of Awakening - Synopsis

“NYI” is an art school deep into Peruvian Amazonia which was created by the non-governmental organization Tawantinsuyu for the members of the Puerto Miguel community. There, Pupils take free classes, and make their cultural and social identity stronger while being taught folk art. 15-odd youths work at creating a theatrical play, contributing with the results of both drama and painting workshops, which allow them to stage three of their founding myths. This experience, which draws bridges between painting, drama and healing, enables them to heal past and present wounds, to bear testimony to the current difficulties faced by their community their hopes in the face of an uncertain future.

“Because art and health go hand in hand; because it is through art that we try to heal, by bringing beauty where there once was hurt.”
Aymara Falcon

“I am not into classifications since they are meant to make us forget what they contain. What does matter? Discovering people as they are. Setting off with no preconception is therefore the most moving thing in the world. Cinema: what function does it serve? It faces people with things, realities such as they are, and gets them to know other people, other problems.”
Roberto Rossellini
