"Jester". The Folichon-Quadrille is a counterpart to the Débardeurs-Quadrille Op. 97. This piece was created for the first costume ball of 1862 held at the Dianasaal, and served, just as did the Débardeurs-Quadrille as an exhilarating accompaniment to a performance by a cast of masked female dancers. These entertainers were termed débardeurs in 1861, as was the fashion in Paris. This time, however, the carnival troupe was dubbed folichon, meaning "jester" or "joker". Josef Strauss also chose that name as the title for his quadrille, which he performed for the first time (conducting a military orchestra) on 11th January 1862 in the Dianasaal. Throughout the 1862 carnival season the Folichon-Quadrille dominated the costume balls held at the Dianabad. A new wave of Parisian carnival spirit reached Vienna the following carnival season, for which Josef Strauss composed his Amazonen-Quadrille Op. 118.
