Hugs are a universal expression of love, comfort or protection.
They're also good for
your health.
A new study published by PLoS One has revealed the surprising benefits of hugging. People who are hugged more are less afflicted by interpersonal conflict.
The sensation of touch soothes the part of the brain that reacts to threats. Hugging stimulates the production of oxytocin, "the cuddle chemical."
"Feeling safer and cared for, in turn, can make us less sensitive to physical pain and less reactive when faced with potentially threatening experiences." Dr. Michael Murphy, Lead author of study, Carnegie Mellon University
A Carnegie Mellon study suggests that hugs can boost your immune system. Hugging babies and young children can help them stay healthier as they grow.
The next time a loved one is stressed out and struggling, offer a hug!
