Footage from a CCTV camera that captured Wednesday evening's hit-andrun in Kandivali has exposed how dangerously the car had spun out of control.

The clip shows at least a dozen people at a bus stop off the main road at Kaka Keni Chowk at 6.38 pm. All of a sudden, a speeding Maruti Esteem rams into the road divider, swerves to the left, and hits the bystanders before crashing into the bus stop.

While victims, including three women, are flung on impact, the driver presses on. The car's tyre, however, got punctured and the driver escaped after abandoning the vehicle.

The recklessness resulted in the death of a 65-year-old man, identified as Shivlal Ramani (1 killed, 6 injured in Charkop hit-and-run, MM, February 13), while the six injured, including four women, were rushed to nearby hospitals where their condition was reported to be stable. The driver, Shrikant Tiwari, was arrested late on Wednesday from his residence in Borivali, and charged for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Indian Penal Code Section 304-A.
