Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has called for a leadership change in the party, saying it is high time for Rahul Gandhi to take over the reins from his mother and party president Sonia Grand.

Speaking to a TV news channel, Singh argued that a change in leadership will rejuvenate the organization.

"Rahul Gandhi should take over the leadership of Congress. We would support him," Singh was quoted as saying.

Congress leader also rubbished suggestions that the timing is not right for Rahul to take charge in view of the party's dipping political fortunes and the possibility of a prolonged lean phase.

"The slump takes place in all parties. Why don't you talk about the slump in CPM or Lalu's RJD? It has nothing to do with the leadership issue," he added further

The demand for Rahul's elevation as Congress chief has come at a time when the party has kickstarted the process of organizational elections, with the membership drive to be completed by the year-end.

This will culminate with the election of the party president in 2015.

It also gains significance as Rahul has begun to discuss election defeats with party leaders, a brainstorming which has gone on for a week and is likely to be followed by an organizational reshuffle.

In support of his claim, Singh further said that Congress had always encouraged a young leadership.

"Nehru became AICC president at the age of 38 years. Maulana Azad became Congress president at 35 years," he added. "There could not be a better time for him to take over. Singh reportedly said.
