America's Longest-Serving Congressman, John Dingell, Dead at 92 The announcement was made by his wife, Debbie Dingell, a current Democratic congresswoman who took over his seat. Debbie Dingell, via statement Dingell went on to say that her husband died peacefully in the city of Dearborn at
the couple's home. Dingell, who represented Michigan, began serving in congress at the age of 29 in 1955. He then stepped down in 2015, becoming the country's longest-serving congressman. Throughout his entire career, Dingell was a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee. Records show he also worked under 11 U.S. presidents. During his time in DC, Dingell helped pass many major bills, including the Civil Rights Act and Affordable Care Act. Recently, he had been known for his criticism and snarky comments about President Trump on Twitter amassing over 250,000 followers.
