"Day and Night". In the summer od 1860, restaurateur and vintner Josef Georg Daum, who had hired the renowed Sperl's in Leopoldstadt, tried to gain new guests for the establishment and to win back the former clientele by recollecting the golden age of the first half of the nineteenth century. Thus Daum published announcements in the Viennese newspapers beginning on 22nd July 1860, inviting the public to a costume ball on 30th July. The ball was called "A summer day and night celebration in the picturesque and beautiful bay of Naples, beneath the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum at the foot of Mount Vesuvius", the public enjoyed a display of lights and props. Since unrelenting bad weather Made it impossible for the programme to be presented in its entire grandiose scope, Daum's plan to conjure up the times of old also failed completely. Naturally, there were plans to repeat the rained-out celebration, but persistent bad weather did not permit it. Thus the Tag und Nacht Polka of Josef Strauss, first performed on 30th July 1860 at the Sperl's establishment, remained the only memento of Daum's endeavor to recreate "the old days". This lively work is among music director Josef Strauss's best and most successful compositions from the first productive decade.
