A Kentucky newspaper recently declined to publish a woman's obituary because it included a disapproving comment about President Trump.

The Louisville Courier-Journal, a Kentucky newspaper, recently declined to publish a woman's obituary because it included a disapproving comment about President Trump, reports the Washington Post. The deceased, Frances Irene Finley Williams, is described by her family as having strong feelings about the current state of politics.  After she passed in November, her daughter, Cathy Duff, decided that should be acknowledged in her obituary and included the line, "Her passing was hastened by her continued frustration with the Trump administration."  The family was later informed that the nearly $1,700 obituary would not be published in the Louisville Courier-Journal unless the Trump line was removed, according to Newsweek. They obliged, but Art Williams, the deceased woman's son, later took to Facebook and described what had happened.  It has since been found that "the Cremation Society of Kentucky, which had been handling Williams's obituary, had received an email from a Gannett employee in Wisconsin, who said the obituary had been rejected because it contained 'negative content,'" notes the Post. The Courier-Journal and Gannett, the publication's owner, have since apologized and offered to reprint the full obituary, free of charge.
