In 2017, Nipton, California was purchased by American Green, a publicly traded company dedicated to the emerging cannabis market including marijuana-dispensing vending machines, a dispensary-locator app, and seed-to-sale tracking solutions. Before American Green bought Nipton, this magical desert town was known for mining during the California Gold Rush, and now the "Green Rush". Nipton has become a hub for art and nature education, but mainly a host location for cannabis tourism.

Nipton is now becoming a place of healing where guests can enjoy nature and cannabis together. American Green announced that the small town would be the first energy-independent, cannabis driven city in the United States, with people who want to work and embrace the cannabis lifestyle. This is the reason why many people visit Nipton, but often find themselves staying longer, "Most people come for a few minutes and wind up staying an afternoon, or like Jim there; he came for a few minutes, and stayed for nine years."
