CCTV footage caught a shocking hit and run accident in south India, where a hotel guard was struck from behind by a car going at high speed, barely surviving.

Vijayakumar, 61, a resident of Kanagavel Nagar in Madurai in Tamil Nadu state, was working as a main-gate duty watchman in the Pandian hotel.

During the early hours of December 9, Vijayakumar was opening the front gate to allow a motorcyclist in before being struck from behind by a white car going at high speed.

The motorcyclist was unharmed, but Vijayakumar was thrown onto the road and hotel staff rushed him to the hospital, while CCTV footage of the accident went viral on social media.

A complaint was launched with the Tallakulam police and the CCTV footage of the hotel was analysed there.

Based on the inputs from the hotel staffs, the police arrested one KM Devanathan, 39, a manager of a private firm and booked him under section of 279, 337 of IPC and 187 of the Motor Vehicle Act.

According to the police, Devanathan was partying with his friends in the hotel and was under the influence of alcohol while driving his car. Later he was produced in magistrate court and was let in bail.

Meanwhile, Watchman Vijayakumar was admitted in Apollo hospital and his left leg was completely removed due to multiple fractures. Doctors described him as severely injured and in critical condition.

The hotel maintained that the watchmen of the hotels were out-sourced by a security agency and not their direct staff.
