Agriculture specialists with U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently found seventy live finches hidden inside hair rollers and packed in a duffel bag. They were discovered at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and reportedly being carried by an individual who had flown in from Georgetown, Guyana. The finches were placed in quarantine and then transferred to the United States Department of Agriculture Veterinary Services. The CBP notes that birds can carry devastating diseases and trigger epidemics such as 2015's bird flu crisis, which "resulted in the culling of 50 million commercial turkeys and chickens and $850 million in damages."
