Created in 1896, initially the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters tournament was for amateurs. In 1969, it became part of the Open series. That's when professionals started playing in the tournament.
The Rolex Monte-Carlos Masters, with Wimbledon, is one of the oldest tennis competition in Europe. It's been around for over 100 years. The competition happens every year between April and May. The weather and the geographical area is also the claim-to-fame of the Monte-Carlo Masters. The competition is on the French Riviera facing the Mediterranean sea. And you can image spring is quite agreeable on the coast.
The Monte-Carlo Masters is also the first European clay tournament of the season. So the players love to come and play on this surface to start the clay season.
