Bees With Sensor Backpacks May Help Farmers Monitor Crops

Bees With Sensor Backpacks May Help Farmers Monitor Crops University of Washington researchers developed tiny sensor backpacks that attach to the back of bumblebees. Multiple antennas inside can triangulate the positions of the insects based on signal strength. The sensors track basic info such as humidity, light and temperature. This technology can collect
info for seven hours at
a time. Batteries for the sensors can even wirelessly recharge and transmit data when the bees go back in their hive. Farmers typically would use high-flying drones to collect data, but would be limited to short battery lives.
