Now that’s a plot twist.

A panicked observer mistook a lifelike dummy — meant to resemble the movie character Clark Griswold and hanging from the roof of an Austin, Texas, home — as a real person and even called police in an effort to save him, local ABC affiliate KVUE reported.

The dummy had been hung from the roof by the owners of the home to re-create a memorable scene from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” in which the character played by Chevy Chase gets stuck while putting up Christmas decorations.

“Oh mister, please hold on!” the observer — identified as Alfred — can be heard yelling to the dummy in a surveillance video as he tries to reposition a prop ladder.

Alfred, a military veteran, also yelled out for help, and the security footage later showed a police officer arriving at the scene and speaking to someone at the front door.

"I was trying to get him down any way I can,” Alfred said in a phone call afterward, according to audio posted by KVUE. "Except when I started talking to him, he never said nothing. Then I thought, 'Oh, my God, I hope he's not dead, let me call 911.' "

Homeowner Chris Heerlein had created the Griswold display in hopes of winning his neighborhood’s decoration contest.

He and his family have since placed a sign in their yard to avoid future confusion.

“Clark G is part of our Christmas display,” the sign reads. “Please do not call 911.”
