Former first lady Michelle Obama has declared in colorful language that Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg's empowerment strategy of "leaning in" "doesn't work all the time."
According to the Daily Mail, Obama was in Brooklyn, New York, Saturday promoting her new memoir "Becoming," when she argued that women could not "have it all" when it comes to family and work.
She reportedly said of having both dynamics: "Nope, not at the same time."
She is then said to have added: "That's a lie. And it's not always enough to lean in, because that s**t doesn't work all the time."
Obama was referring to the strategy popularized in Sandberg's 2013 book titled "Lean In," which encouraged women to become more proactive at work to get ahead.
However, the Facebook executive later admitted that her approach did not take into account, in her words, "how hard it is to succeed at work when you are overwhelmed at home."
Michelle Obama's book has already become the bestselling hardcover book of the year with more than 2 million copies sold in the first 15 days of release.
