Many U.S. Moms Stop Breastfeeding Too Soon While more American mothers are breastfeeding, many stop earlier than they should. According to a new report from the CDC, 83.2% of moms were nursing after birth, 57.6% continued after 6 months and 35.9% were still breastfeeding at 12 months. Centers for Disease Control The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. Moms are encouraged to continue nursing while introducing foods until the baby's first birthday.
