A passenger was caught on camera taunting and insulting a woman who was wearing a hijab on board a bus in New York City on July 10.This footage, shot by bystander Marco Lao, shows the middle of the altercation. The passenger yelling the insults identifies herself to the camera as Ashley.“I’m getting into a fight with some Muslim chick because she has an attitude, because she thinks she has rights she doesn’t have,” she says to the camera. “Immigration at the door; oh wait, is that ICE? Oh mama, they here for you.”According to reports from CNN and Gothamist the hijab-wearing woman had difficulty pulling her stroller onto the bus, prompting Ashley to yell at her. The situation reportedly settled down after the bus driver intervened. The bus was traveling to Staten Island at the time, and local Congressman Dan Donovan condemned the incident in a July 12 press release.““The hateful rhetoric seen aboard a bus bound for Staten Island today was reprehensible and will not be tolerated in our community,” the press release reads. "No race, religion, or ethnicity is superior to another – and it will never be acceptable to threaten or intimidate someone because of the God to whom they pray. I condemn this intolerance, and there is no denying that bigotry and discrimination goes against the values our nation stands for. This incident does not reflect the true spirit of our borough, and we must re-affirm our commitment to civility and acceptance.” Credit: Marco Lao via Storyful
