Bananas Might Be Going Extinct

Bananas Might Be Going Extinct Most domesticated bananas that we see in the supermarket are a type known as the Cavendish. This banana is extremely vulnerable to a fungus called Panama disease. Panama disease has been found in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Australia. Most commercially consumed bananas come from South America. Should the fungus reach there, the Cavendish banana could go extinct. Scientists may have to to cross-breed a fruit hybrid with a Madagascan banana immune to Panama disease.
