An animation of a Retina Implant. A blind paralympic swimmer can now see his five silver and bronze medals for the first time after having pioneering surgery to have a pair of bionic eyes fitted. Battling Tim Reddish, 55, can now see vague shapes after having an implant in his retinas that allows him to see for the first time since going completely blind 17 YEARS ago. The champion swimmer began losing his sight when he was just 31 due to degenerative disease retinitis pigmentosa. Tim agreed to take part in a trial of the new implant in 2012 and went under the knife in October last year. The 55-year-old won 11 world blind swimming championships gold medals and three paralympic silver medals and two bronzes over a decade-long career - and is now chairman of the British Paralympic Association.
