Operation Blue Star was launched by the Indian Army between 1 June and 6 June, 1984 on the orders of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to eliminate militant religious leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his militant armed followers from the Harmandir Sahib Complex in Amritsar, Punjab. At the time of the operation, nearly 100,000 Army troops were deployed throughout Punjab.
