Operation Blue Star is remembered as one of the worst chapters in the history of independent India. It is not often when you get to see a state and its army against its own citizens. June 6, 1984, is indeed remembered as a bloody day by both the Sikhs community who believe that their religious sentiments were outraged and also by the security agencies, who believe that they had no option but to root out people with separatist sentiments. Under the orders of the then prime minister, Indira Gandhi, the Indian military stormed into the premises of the Golden Temple in Amritsar to drive out the Sikh extremist religious leader, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his armed followers.
