00:20Hello everyone and welcome to this new video of uniform presentation. Today I'm not going to present one but two German uniforms:
00:27The dress uniform with the specific jacket called Waffenrock and the outfit for Staff officer type, so with light equipment.
00:57Before beginning this video, I must warn you on several points. I don’t pretend to know everything, so if you have any comments, it is quite possible that you know more than me on the subject.
01:10Then I didn’t deliberately concealed the swastikas, I made the choice to present the faithful historically outfit, insignias were therefore not to be changed.
01:23But that does not mean I do not condemn the ideas conveyed by this crosses, let ideology in the closet, we are talking about the uniform.
01:37This video is only a base which will serve to build up your uniform, it is by no means a bible that would save you the purchase of books, magazines or internet searches to form your own outfit.
01:51I will present what I wear on me to save you from a 2h video. You will find a list of items constituting the uniform in the description of this video.
01:59Ranks of the Wehrmacht
02:07I take the presentation of two officers in uniform to make you a little history on all main grades worn in the Wehrmacht, more precisely in the Heer.
02:14First of all, I have to prepare for the vocabulary that I use:
02:20The Litzen are the collar tabs of the German army. Here for classic jackets. The shoulder straps are found here, arms grades are found here, and badges for camouflage uniforms are in this form. I will also discuss pips, which are in this form.
02:49Little nails we find on the shoulder straps
02:52The Litzen of the troops and NCOs of the beginning of the war are color piping, which can be found on the shoulders of all the soldiers, this to the rank of Oberst.
03:01This border, the Waffenfarbe, is the weapon of the soldier. The officers Litzen keep the same format until the end of the war, the jacket does not evolve, in contrary of the troop jackets.
03:12The main are: White: Infantry; Hunters, mountain hunter: Green; Red: Artillery; Yellow: Cavalry; Pink: Panzer; Black: Pioneer.
03:26Now for the lower ranks: All arm badges are green background when the collar is green, otherwise it will Feldgrau background. The set of theses elements must be with the same color. The same for the breast eagle.
03:47First, the soldier 2nd class: has no rank insignia: nothing on the sleeve, and shoulder pads are blank. It has Litzen small model.
03:57Then we have the first class soldier, we take the same set as before, and we add an embroided pip on a circular badge for the arm insignia.
04:07Corporal wearing a V on his sleeve, all on a dark green triangle. The silver braid is the same as that used for NCOs collar, would come back later.
04:16Master Corporal has additional V badge on his sleeve.
04:21A grade that doesn’t exist in French, but that is just before the rank of sergeant, and just above Master Corporal. So you could call it corporal 1st class. The arm badge features an embroidered pips plus V already in the previous grade.
04:38We now talk about NCO ranks. The common feature of all ranks I will show you is there is a silver tress on the collar, just below the Litzen, which are the same type as those of the infantry.
04:47All the shoulders boards had a tress on its borders, except for the first rank: it was like a "U".
04:54I will introduce new insignias we can see on the arms. We see the rank worn on camouflaged uniforms from 22 August 1942. This grade was wearing two sides camouflage effects.
05:03The sergeant has classic Litzen, a silver tress on his shoulder pads, but that is not the complete tour. It therefore forms a U.
05:10A simple green stripe on black background represents the rank of Unteroffizer.
05:14The next rank is staff sergeant. The tress on their epaulettes is right round the perimeter, and a band is added to the badge for camouflage uniform.
05:24To the rank of warrant officer, is added pips on the shoulder straps and a band on the arm badge.
05:31The chief warrant officer is to add a new pips and a band on the arm badge.
05:38The last NCO's grade is placed between the rank of Oberfeldwebel and officer's rank. By analogy with the French army, we therefore call Major. But not confound with an other rank I'll present later. I precise : Major for French Army.
05:56We'll add a 3rd pips and a new band on the arm insignia.
06:03We change totally the category and into the officer class. This passage also leads to change the jacket. The Litzen also become embroidered version with silver thread. The whole is placed on a rigid base covered bottle green felt.
06:16The insignia camouflaged for smock uses the same principle as the NCO ranks, but topped with two acorns and two oak leaves, with a band below, minimum, it's for the first rank: second lieutnant.
06:26Beware the trap, German Leutnant corresponds to second lieutenant!
06:32The rank of Oberleutnant corresponds to the rank of Lieutenant. We add a gold pips on the shoulder and has an additional band on the arm badge for camouflage jackets.
06:44Then we have the captain, with two gold pips and three bands under the oak leaves and acorns.
06:51Then we go to the rank of commander, where the background of the shoulder pads changes: the silver wires are no longer parallel but are intertwined.
06:58The arm’s rank becomes a one band, but surmounted by two symbols representing the officers.
07:03Please note again: the French for commander is called "Major" in German. In the French army, we speak of battalion chief for the infantry, squadrons’ commander for the cavalry, squadron (singular) leader for artillery...
07:19The next rank is lieutenant colonel, returning to a previous pips on the shoulder, and that an additional band on the arm.
07:27And last grade in this category: colonel, who has two pips and three stripes on the arm badge.
07:35Once again, we change class, change all insignias and exchange jacket, which will be specific to the general.
07:43We have the same number of grades of general in the German army as in the current French army.
07:49The General grades were gold embroidered collar tabs on bright red background. We take the same grounds as the epaulettes of high officers, except we add golden wires in the scheme, and will be on a red background.
08:00For general grades, the original army soldier (infantry, artillery, etc.) will not be considered. The arm rank shows the same pattern as for officers, but with yellow items.
08:05The brigadier general rank is the first step from the general class.
08:09We take the same system as before in previous classes: the higher you go, the greater the pips on the shoulder straps, and stripes on the arm badges. So the rank of major general, called 3-star general in France corresponds to the rank of Generalleutnant
08:24The next grade, with two pips and three bands, corresponding to the general corps. It is referred to the original weapon of the senior officer, so we have General der infantry, General der Panzertruppe, etc. 4 stars for the French army.
08:43The rank of Army general is the highest grade in the “general” category. In the French army, it corresponds to the general 5 Stars.
08:51Here there are 3 pips on the shoulder straps, and three pips embroidered on a large gold band, under the badge of golden officer for the arm band for camouflaged uniforms.
09:00Last grade met in the Wehrmacht, the highest in all armies of the world: the Marshal, Generalfeldmarschall in German. The collar tabs are larger than the general collar tabs, we note a new pattern.
09:11The two crossed sticks of marshal are found on the shoulder straps as well as a single wide gold band for the badge of camouflaged jacket.
09:19Note that before 1942, the wires of interwoven shoulder straps were all golden, whereas after 1942, we had half of wires in silver and half of wires in silver for the background.
09:39The Waffenrock comes directly from the Prussian army in 1842 and was quickly adopted by other German states. The cut you see here is adopted by the Wehrmacht on June 29th, 1935.
09:50The jacket closes with 8 big buttons and has no front pocket. Lower back, there is a facing forming two flaps sewn vertically and decorated with six silver buttons.
10:01The trousers worn with Waffenrock was dark gray, slightly darker than the jacket, and had the Waffenfarbe as edging on the side.
10:08The white border featured on this pant sets trousers for the infantry. This is a ceremony trousers found on a website selling German post-war effects.
10:18Shoes should be shiny black, like ceremony shoes. This is military footwear of an officer in the current French army, which correspond exactly to the required role.
10:27Ärmelpatten, which resembled Litzen were placed at the end of the Waffenrock’s sleeves, which also had a green background bottle.
10:35The color of the weapon is found on all the front of the jacket, on the edge of the left flap, on the collar, sleeves and on the back flap.
10:42The collar was higher than the standard jacket and allowed the addition of more elaborate Litzen, embroidered in white and silver thread.
10:49NCOs and men of the troops kept the same belt as for the front. The buckle was aluminum and allowed to adjust the belt to the soldier waist.
10:58As Unterfeldwebel, we find shoulder tabs sewn to the jacket and a button stared at the other end of the shoulder.
11:03The NCO tress is set on the edge of the collar, but on the upper this time.
11:08You can wear the medals in two ways: either the medals are pending, or you carries the reminder ribbons, under form of strip. Here we have the Iron Cross 2nd class and medal from the Ostfront, nicknamed "frozen meat medal."
11:20Our soldier also has a cord shooter, rewarding the best shooters in the shotgun, machine guns, etc. The breast eagle is traditionally worn on the right flap of the jacket.
11:29The shooter cord is attached to the second button and has a badge defining the degree of the shooter. We find Litzen variants on the sleeves, Ärmelpatten with the specific NCOs tress. Leather white gloves were the icing on the cake.
11:43Attention they get quickly dirty and they size small in general. Our soldiers have made remarkable actions in battle, he wears an Iron Cross 1st Class and the black wound badge (for one injury) on the left flap of his Waffenrock.
11:55Note that the belt should be placed, in the back, above the buttons fixing the flaps so as to support the weight of a sword or bayonet, when the grade is suitable.
12:05The Schirmmütze was worn by all the German army, but the NCOs and men of the troupe had a special model, the officers have their own model. For NCOs, it is the wool model, also worn on the front.
12:16Hint: if your cap is slightly too high, add a piece of adhesive foam to the front and back of the cap, in order that a gust of wind won’t raise it.
12:25We find the Waffenfarbe that goes all around the top of the cap, and a framing a felt strip green bottle color.
12:31Another little tip: get rid of this steel strapping inside the cap so that it has a more flat look. A leather cord attached on each side by two rivets can recognize a cap of NCO.
12:44This prestigious and rare outfit couldn’t be kept long, too expensive for a country going into a war. Therefore, it has been replaced with a less expensive jacket, Waffenrock is suppressed officially on 03.21.1940.
12:55But it is not impossible to find after that date for special occasions, this is why the medal of the Ostfront may be on the uniform of our soldier.
13:02Note that many Waffenrock were converted into Feldbluse. This will continue until the disappearance of the outfit due to its wear.
13:09The NCOs parade outfit required helmet and boots over the pants, this instead of Schirmmütze and classic shoes.
13:27At the beginning of the WW2, the officers wore all the same type of uniform in all circumstances: the uniform in Gabardine, which was almost the same section as Waffenrock previously presented, with extra pockets, and of course adapted to officers ranks.
13:40From 1941 was developed an outfit more suited for battle, made of wool, but had the same cut as the previous uniform, manufactured between 1936 and 1941.
13:49The officer has a wool pants cut like "saddle bags" and features laces on the sides of calves in order to press the trousers against the calf, facilitating wearing high-cut boots that will be pressed against the calf.
14:01There were several types of boots for officers, they have more freedom than the troops in their choice of equipment. This is cheap copies of officers' boots. To be perfectly fitting would require that your pair of boots is made to measure.
14:13The operation is far to be financially accessible to all, that is why my own pair of boots seems too large on the top of the calf. You choose if you want a smooth or nailed sole. The staff officers more opted for smooth soles, ideal for buildings.
14:26The M41 jacket of officer was tailor-made for any man that has the adapted class. However, it was possible to find officers with troops jackets, mounted with officer insignias. But it wasn’t common.
14:37Thus the jacket M41 differs from the one of the troop with a higher neck than a conventional M41 jacket. It has 6 buttons to close the flaps, and pocket flaps have spikes on the ends, unlike traditional pockets.
14:50A liner is also present at the end of the sleeves. It has no hooks to the hips, which could cause problems.
15:00Our officer wears many badges and decorations: The 2nd class Iron Cross medal and the Ostfront medal are in ribbon form, installed on the second buttonhole.
15:07On the right chest, we find an embroidered breast eagle, specific officers. The grade is indicated on his shoulder boards. It is therefore Leutnant, or second lieutenant in French.
15:16On the right sleeve, found the insignia of destroying armored awarded when a soldier destroyed an armored with an individual weapon, such as stick grenade, a Panzerfaust, TNT or traps.
15:25The Litzen are still present, but officer Version: they are larger than for classical troupe. They always have the Waffenfarbe, here in white for infantry.
15:32And finally, two medals on the pocket: 1st class Iron Cross, awarded for bravery, and the Infantry Assault Badge bronze version awarded to motorized units for various actions.
15:41The Shirmmütze for officers has the same shape than NCO’s one previously presented. There is a wool pattern, like this one, and a model Gabardine, that goes with the corresponding outfit. We find the Waffenfarbe at the same locations as before.
15:54The eagle may be metal, as here, or an embroidered badge with silver thread. The central emblem is embroidered. The leather strap NCOs is replaced by a silver braid connected to two buttons on each side.
16:05We can see the two cap models to compare. It will be noted that the finishing of the green felt strip is different.
16:16The leather belt is specific for officers, recognizable by its buckle.
16:19Our officer is surely aware that he wears it badly, but no hook added to the gun’s weight doesn’t helps to wear it properly, and no mirrors were at all street corners to check everything was well placed.
16:30Being a staff officer, a map case will be required to contain the maps of the terrain, mail and pencils. Feel free to write your own letters to the typewriter, on headed paper!
16:41These small details make living a uniform. The map case is placed on the belt by two adjustable leather straps.
16:48On the left flank of our Leutnant, we find the holster for P38. There were several types of holsters, it is in black, softshell.
16:55It contains the Walther P38, pistol replacing the Lüger P08. Designed in 1938, hence the name, it was manufactured in large quantities from 1940. In 1944, the cost of manufacturing a P38 was $14 when Lüger was costing almost $20.
17:11This is the Airsoft version developed by WE limited edition, you will find the link of the review in the description.
17:17It could contain an 8 cartridges magazine and holster allowed to carry an extra. This gun was revolutionary for the time, because of the first double action, with a safety lever which disarmed the hammer.
17:27The 6x30 binoculars, or German Dienstglas, were the regulatory binoculars of the German Army. They were manufactured first in black version and in beige from 1943.
17:36A leather flap allowed to set to a button on the jacket, to avoid accidents when they had to lean forward. They were distributed to officers and some NCOs.
17:45For a staff officer, a pair of binoculars was essential to be able to identify its own troops, once they were settled in their positions, but also to identify enemy positions. A leather box could be brought on the belt for storage.
17:57Our officer wearing leather gloves. This is current gloves from French army officers. But they are not mandatory, regulatory gloves being woolen gloves.
18:05Of course, there were many shades to the officer's uniform. It’s advisable to buy the pants and jacket at the same location to have the same color of the set.
18:13Note that the holster is worn on the left side, unlike the Allies, who had the holster on the right. Due to his young age and his decorations, we can imagine that this officer has just been promoted.
18:23However, his beard and hair cut are not regulatory. But on the front, the physical aspect, although important for the German army, could be forgotten a few days.
18:31Under the jacket, you can choose to wear a gray shirt or a white shirt, though the white shirt was rather appointed for the gabardine outfit.
18:37Tip: Don’t add decorations just to look pretty. All those presented here are supported by the experiences I have known in airsoft games and reenactment.
18:45Adjust your rank based on your age also to be consistent, and so to be accepted in reenactment groups already formed.
19:01The German dress uniform before 1940 was the Waffenrock. Made to measure, it was worn for all major social occasions.
19:08We find the jacket that closes with 8 buttons, which has no external pockets. At the end of the sleeves, we have Ärmelpatten (Litzen’s variant). White leather gloves are a must to complete the outfit!
19:19A leather belt with its aluminum buckle was used by the troops and NCO. Just above we find a cross of first class iron and a black wound badge. (For one injury)
19:27Our soldier being Unterfeldwebel, we find that rank on the shoulder straps, attached to the top of the jacket. The collar hosts Litzen and specific NCOs tress.
19:36A breast eagle is placed on the right flap, and a shooter cord is attached under the shoulder straps on one side and on the 2nd button for the other.
19:42The regulatory headgear was Schirmmütze, here specific model for NCOs, which can be recognized through a leather strip on the front of the cap.
19:49By the way we can see the specific NCOs tress is placed on the top of the collar, while they were placed on the bottom for combat jackets.
19:55On the left flap, we find reminder ribbon Iron Cross 2nd class and Ostfront medal. We could also have dangling medals hanging on the jacket.
20:02Gray trousers with a border in the colors of the weapon was the ceremony pants. Needless to say, it must be carefully ironed!
20:10Shiny black shoes will be the last element required for the ceremony uniform. These are shoes of the current French army, which closely resemble to the model for this time.
20:18The officer’s battle dress was wool from 1941, Gabardine outfit being too expensive to manufacture. The M41 jacket was tailor-made and had some changes compared to the model for the troop.
20:29A breast eagle for officer was sewn to the usual location, we find the grades on the shoulders boards, Litzen for officers and a victory against an armored vehicle symbolized by a badge on the sleeve.
20:38The Schirmmütze was specific for officers, with a silver tress on the front. Medals ribbons were hung on the second button, the same medals as the previous outfit. Other prestigious medals are on the left pocket, the most important being centered.
20:51A special belt for officers comes to carry some equipment. A leather map case allowed to carry number of documents, and a black softshell holster in leather allowed to carry the pistol Walther P38 and an additional magazine.
21:03We notice a pair of binoculars passed around the neck and secured with a small strap on a button.
21:08The Walther P38 was intended to replace the P08 Lüger, becoming old. This is an airsoft model manufactured by WE, you will find the link of the review in the description.
21:18You can choose to wear leather gloves, gloves presented here come from French army, but be aware that regulatory gloves were made of wool.
21:25The M41 outfit was completed with trousers of the same type, also in wool and cut called "saddlebags". A lace presses the bottom of the trousers to facilitate the calf insertion in leather boots. High leather boots should therefore hide the lace.
21:38Troop’s boots could be used on the front, but they weren’t recommended for buildings because of the nails. We have a smooth leather sole, perfect for staff officers. For small budget, you can opt for riding boots, but are rubber, though the cut is good.
21:52Do not overload medals, they must be justified to the maximum in order to stay consistent with your personal background.
22:04This is now the end of this video. I hope you liked it, if it's the case, don't hesitate to share this video, leave an comment, and subscribe to my channel. I'll see you in the next video! Bye!
