I live in a desert. Haboobs are a thing that happen. The first one you experience is pretty crazy. There's just an enormous red/orange wall of dust and sand that fills the horizon as it approaches. Everyone has to get off the road, and stay indoors because visibility gets to zero.
I've lived here many years and experienced many sand and dust storms. Recently, however, I had a first.
I was on the road in the middle of nowhere when one came up, so we couldn't get indoors. It was the first time I had ever seen lightning strike in a sand storm. It was strangely beautiful in a way divergent from rainstorms.
That was an experience in itself, but as the dust began to settle a bit, we saw a rainbow appear in the dust clouds! And then, we realized it was a double rainbow. It's hard to explain how surreal it is to see that in the middle of the desert, in the midst of fields of brown and clouds of dust, but I'm glad I got to witness it.
