Terno Rei
'Vigília' is the title for the debut album from Sao Paulo's quintet Terno Rei.
The work presents, in 10 tracks, the band's transition to a new direction in its sonority, filled with dream pop references and an intriguing Brazilian root that flirts with alternative. It's the transparency of the actual moment for each band member, plus a modification on its musical structures comparing to the band's early materials, taking the melodies to introspective ambiance and extra caution in each step taken.
Since its first hearing, 'Vigília' reveals itself as a concise and intense album, holding the attention for its details on tones, notes, noises and whispers that run throughout the songs. The guitars from Greg Vinha and Bruno Paschoal sound freely and spotlight the repetition of ideas, that generate a state of calm through the entire album.
The feeling of melancholy makes way for Ale Sater, responsible for the main vocals and bass, to explore in its lyrics a particular and sometimes, emotive universe, describing in an overloaded way the various situations of a common place.
In the opening track "Manga Rosa", it is announced a strong and constant theme for the album, in its verses "In each picture, a memory, and deep down the hope that one day, the paradise will be back". The riffs get a higher value with the addition of a Rhodes piano, recorded by special guest Anselmo Mancini, that also participantes in two songs more.
The serenity and initial smooth gives place to "Luz de Bem" that jumps to the ears like a curtain being opened at dawn. In sequence, the fingering in "Ela" unites with the simplicity from chords and dry drumbeats by Luis Cardoso, that sounds like trailing a silent and clean road. The percussions by Victor Souza are also a strong point, strengthening the influences from popular Brazilian music, filling the silence with precision, contributing to the narrative's rhythm.
"Salto da Pedra da Gávea", with trumpeter Roger Brito, reveals the notorious crescent on the álbum and takes the listener to a smooth trip, coming like a breeze after the strenght in "O DiaRaiou". Each element is carefully planned, awakening memories and nostalgia that could have as background, the sunset in a grey afternoon. "Esconderijo" e "Saudade" give the final tone, bringing a certain beauty that refers to Yo La Tengo's best sentimental moments, alternating finesse with noisy guitars.
With the recording and production by Guilherme Chiappetta, the album sends its message by repetition, generating a true state of 'Vigília'.
Release scheduled for 27th of april, on digital formats and CD by the label Balaclava Records.
Terno Rei will launch the album 'Vigilia' in the show on next May 15th 2014 at Centro Cultural Sao Paulo.
