The 2013 Himalayan climbing season has been somewhat of a disappointment, including a fatal incident on Everest.

It's been reported by a Chinese news agency that 3 Tibetans and an Australian have been killed on the north side of Mount Everest. The Chinese government claimed that the trip they were part of was in an "off limits" area, but it's now believed that this may be an attempt to divert attention from their own poor handling of the rescue operation. We probably won't get to the bottom of it, but it's another example of how poor conditions have been in the Himalayas this autumn.

This is normally one of the main seasons for the Nepalese Himalayas (the other one being spring) but this year has been a bit of a washout. Shishipangma has seen no-one on it's summit despite the efforts of a strong international team, Cho Oyu and Manaslu were climbed earlier in the season but have now been deserted after heavy snowfall, and the 2 teams on Lhotse have made no significant progress. People are climbing some of the lower peaks, but it's been a very poor season overall. It's a pretty tough place at the best of times but this year has been especially tough.

Ueli Steck's ascent on Annapurna is made to look even more impressive when we know this...
