What does Watson do?
Watson is an IBM supercomputer that combines artificial intelligence (AI) and sophisticated analytical software for optimal performance as a “question answering” machine. The supercomputer is named for IBM's founder, Thomas J. Watson.

What is cognitive in business?
Cognitive computing is the simulation of human thought processes in a computerized model. Cognitive computing involves self-learning systems that use data mining, pattern recognition and natural language processing to mimic the way the human brain works.

What is a Watson computer?
Watson is a question answering computer system capable of answering questions posed in natural language, developed in IBM's DeepQA project by a research team led by principal investigator David Ferrucci. Watson was named after IBM's first CEO, industrialist Thomas J. Watson.

What does it cost to use Watson?
The hardware Watson uses is estimated to cost $3 million. IBM itself has annual revenues in the $100 billion range which is why they cannot afford to be doing projects in the less than $1 million range; to be honest, I'd be surprised if they'd be interested in projects with an expected revenue of less than $10 million.

What is Watson API?
IBM Watson API. Machine Learning. The IBM Watson Developer Cloud is currently available to a select group of partner developers who are developing “Powered by Watson” applications. ... Or, choose to request access to the Watson Developer Cloud and Watson APIs when they are publicly available.

What is Watson IOT?
IBM Watson IoT Platform Connect. Easily connect devices from chips to intelligent appliances to your applications and industry solutions. Perform device management functions, scale through cloud-based services, and then use rich analytics to gain insights and achieve organizational transformation.

Is Watson free?
Anyone Can Now Use IBM's Watson To Crunch Data For Free. ... But the supercomputer is more than just a mechanism for IBM to publicly shame smart people. It's arguably the most powerful natural-language supercomputer in the world, and thanks to a new public beta, its number-crunching abilities are open to all.

What is the IBM Watson Analytics?
IBM Watson Analytics is a smart data analysis and visualization service on the cloud that helps just about anyone quickly discover patterns and meanings in their data – all on their own.

What is the Bluemix?
IBM Bluemix is a cloud platform as a service (PaaS) developed by IBM. It supports several programming languages and services as well as integrated DevOps to build, run, deploy and manage applications on the cloud. Bluemix is based on Cloud Foundry open technology and runs on SoftLayer infrastructure.

What language is Watson written in?
IBM's Watson written mostly in Java. In this blog on reddit, the developers of IBM's Watson mentioned that the code was mostly written in Java, with significant chunks written in C++ and Prolog, running on Linux. Here's an excerpt.

What is Deep Blue?
Deep Blue was a chess-playing computer developed by IBM. It is known for being the first computer chess-playing system to win both a chess game and a chess match against a reigning world champion under regular time controls.

This is the direction of the future. Useful AI that can do the research of a thousand men instantly. It's definitely worth noting that Watson is capable of learning (a point I didn't touch on in this video), so what you see here is the "baby phase" so to speak. I tried to leave out the technical jargon in this video but for those who want to know more, a wiki dump on Watson is below:

According to John Rennie, Watson can process 500 gigabytes, the equivalent of a million books, per second.

Software
Watson uses IBM's DeepQA software and the Apache UIMA (Unstructured Information Management Architecture) framework.

Hardware
The system is workload optimized, integrating massively parallel POWER7 processors and being built on IBM's DeepQA technology, which it uses to generate hypotheses, gather massive evidence, and analyze data. Watson is composed of a cluster of ninety IBM Power 750 servers, each of which uses a 3.5 GHz POWER7 eight core processor, with four threads per core. In total, the system has 2,880 POWER7 processor cores and has 16 terabytes of RAM.
