Good Luck Getting Married Without A Toilet In India

No toilet? No bride!

The Indian state of Haryana is urging parents of brides to demand toilets in marriage negotiations for potential grooms. The social marketing campaign was launched in 2005 with the goal is to increase the installation of toilets in the rural areas.

And it’s working. Private toilet ownership is reportedly up by 21%, with women realizing their bargaining power. Now many more women don’t have to go in an open field, improving their privacy, safety, and hygiene.
