The car is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder four-cylinder engine, used in the high-end versions of the Accord, which was configured with Ariel electronics to help it produce 235bhp at 7200rpm. Its 221 lb. output torque is especially impressive as it matches the supercharged 2.0-liter Atom which is one of the fastest cars on the road.

The latest specs, just issued, list Nomad's weight with a modest 670 kg, despite the larger wheels and tires, additional roll protection, long travel suspension and chassis modifications required so it can handle off-road use .

The result is a car with a road racing time of 0 to 60 mph of only 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph, which should make it capable of beating full-fledged rally cars both in the off -road specials where they are developed as in real motoring events.

Ariel boss Simon Saunders thinks most Nomads will be bought for recreational driving both on and off the road but the car has the credentials to achieve success in the rally competition. Saunders believes that a well-configured nomad could eventually compete "with honor" on the Dakar Rally, not necessarily winning but at least coming to an end in good form.

Ariel tried with the idea of a Nomad style vehicle since the early days of the Atom, but the work of continuing the development of the Atom, along with the highly successful Ace motorcycle launch, continued intruding.

However, the Nomad project has made headway in recent times when it was taken over by Ariel founder Henry Siebert-Saunders's son whose interest in off-roading encouraged him to complete the prototype and lead its development in terrain normally reserved for conventional, slow and heavy 4x4s.

"We tested the Nomad on a variety of racing circuits and races, as well as several private tracks, including well-known WRC stages, winch challenge courses and closed forest roads," said Siebert-Saunders.

"The idea was to test our two-wheeled car for a conventional 4WD test, as we believe its compactness, torque and light weight would compensate for its lack of traction on all four wheels. We have been right up until now and the Nomad has rolled it up, to the extent that the whole boils down to a new kind of driving fun. "

The intimate resemblance of the Nomad's essential structure to that of the original bronze welded chassis of the Atom is obvious, but the Nomad also has a rolling structure that wraps the A-pillars for an optional windshield.

The instrument's pod, the six-speed manual gearbox and the pedal box are recognizable, while the completely different suspension layout builds up the Atom's internal configuration to provide a much longer ride and carry the wheels and much greasier and higher tires needed by a car with Nomad's priorities.

The car features a selection of abbreviated polyethylene body panels, including a nose cone, engine cap, bumper covers, mudguards, and bonnet. Standard cars keep many of these panels in black - like the Atom does - but owners will be able to choose from a large number of custom variations, including a variety of colors for tubular frame frames. Accessories such as roof lights, nerf bars, luggage racks and special exhausts will certainly be popular.

There will likely be optional seating, although the standard configuration, closely related to the molding of an original piece of the Atom for two people, is attractive and space efficient.

As with the Atom, owners will receive a wide selection of optional dampers, brakes and wheel / tire combinations, although the 235/75 R15 prototype tires have proven themselves well at work. Siebert-Saunders confirmed to Autocar at Autosport International that there is room for further adjustment in future Nomad models.

"Inevitably, we're going on the same route we have with Atom, since Nomad is a fixed configuration right now," he said. "We could make the Nomad more adjustable."

As with the Atom, Ariel says she plans to build up to 100 examples per year from Nomad.
