Ivana Trump does not appear to be backing away from reported tensions with first lady Melania Trump.
During an appearance on 'The Wendy Williams Show' which aired Friday, Ivana said, “Well, I tell you, I am technically ‘first lady Trump.’ I was [the] first wife.”
Ivana wed then-businessman Donald Trump in 1977, and they were married for about 15 years until they divorced in 1992, according to The Hill.
She told Williams, “I don't know what is Melania's problem, she just has to get over it. She's first lady of America, but I'm first lady Trump.”
Her comments come on the heels of a somewhat biting statement the first lady’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, released to CNN, after the president’s first wife made similar comments on 'Good Morning America' while promoting her new book, “Raising Trump.”
“I have the direct number to White House but I don't really want to call him there because Melania is there and I don't want to cause any kind of jealousy or something like that because I'm basically first Trump wife, okay? I'm first lady, okay?” Ivana had said during her ABC interview.
“Mrs. [Melania] Trump has made the White House a home for Barron and the President," Grisham's statement read in response. "She loves living in Washington, DC, and is honored by her role as first lady of the United States. She plans to use her title and role to help children, not sell books. There is clearly no substance to this statement from an ex, this is unfortunately only attention-seeking and self-serving noise.”
Despite referring to herself as “first lady,” Ivana Trump has denied any desire to be living in the White House; during a recent interview on Fox News, she was asked if she wished she could be in Melania’s position, and Ivana said with a laugh, “Not at all….Washington, it’s [a] tough town.”
And after expressing appreciation for the freedom in her life, she said, "I’m glad Melania is there, and I’m here.”
