7. The Yellow River \r
The Yellow River is one of the most well known rivers in China and is the 3rd longest river in Asia as well as the 6th longest river system in the world. It measures at a length of 3,395 miles or 5,464 km and is sourced by the Bayan Har Mountains. Even with all this notoriety, the Yellow River is now said to be so badly polluted, it is now undrinkable, with over 85% of it considered not fit for consumption. This is due in part of course to the countrys big industrial presence that it makes sense a lot of that waste flows into one of their biggest rivers--which also used to be a big source for drinking water and fishing.\r

6. Niger Delta\r
The Niger Delta, a big part of the livelihood of the nearby communities in Bodo, was contaminated with huge oil spills during the years 2008 and new. Though that was nearly a decade ago, it seems there hasnt been much in way of cleaning it up or paying for damages or compensation for the oil spill that was caused by Royal Dutch Shell. Oil continues to gather in the deltas creek. This is something that of course affects the people who make their livelihood off the delta, with fishing for anything substantial becoming quite difficult. \r

5. Norilsk, Siberia\r
Due to the high amounts of nickel that is smelt in the city of Norilsk, it has been named as one of Russias most polluted places according to The Russian Federal State Statistics Service. The level of pollution is overwhelming, with makes itself known with the dense smog and acid rain. Throughout the whole world, 1% of the global emissions of sulfur dioxide is said to be sourced from Norilsk. Norilsk Nickel shut down one of its fories recently in order to reduce the pollution. Then the Daldykan River turned bright red and people were suddenly blaming Norilsk Nickel again, though they denied it at first, they later accepted the responsibility for the harmful spillage into the river.\r

4. The Bloody Lake (sad er sad dher)\r
Speaking of bright red waters, when this image over Sadr City in Iraq circulated on the internet in 2007 from a google earth search, there were all sorts of theories as to what the source of the redness could be. And this is one of the more mysterious incidents on this list. There was talk of a animal slaughterhouse spilling blood into the lake and it caused quite a stir for everyone who didnt know what was going on. The image went viral, and for a while there was no explanation at all. Though scientists have said this is might be to an overabundance of salt, it has been concluded to be due to pollution from the city flowing into the lake.\r

3. BP Oil Spill\r
Many followed the news of the BP Oil spill when it was immediately covered by news outlets. It was such a big event that it doesnt seem like the BP Oil Spill occurred all the way back in new. Also known as the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, this incident would be known as the largest marine oil spill in history. There was an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf Of Mexico. The Deepwater Horizon was a drilling rig which fell apart after it ignited due to what is speculated to be high pressure or methane gas expanding from the well and into the drilling riser. The incident was endless covered on the news and in turn caused a lot of shame for BP oil company.\r

2. Baia Mare Cyanide Spill (bye ah mar)\r
Also known at the 2000 Baia Mare Cyanide Spill, this incident was caused after a cyanide leaked into the Somes River. It was all traced by back to operations by Aurul, a gold mining company. The water flowed all the way down to Tisza (tee sa) which would then cause fatalities to the wildlife there as well as into the much more well known river of the Danube. The contaminated aquatic life were fished out of the river so that it wouldnt further contaminate the water or be fished by people to be eaten. After Chernobyl, the incident near Baia Mare, Romania is considered the 2nd most devastating environmental disaster in Europe.\r

One of the strangest environmental disasters to have ever occurred is that of the incident at Lake Nyos. It started when a man from the nearby village came across an antelope that was already deceased. He didnt think much of it and even proceeded to pick it up for food. Then he came across many more dead animals along the lake. It was 1986, and a limnic eruption released up to 300,000 tons of CO2 into the air.
