A recent study has revealed that Switzerland’s sewers are filled with gold.
Researchers have found that each year, roughly $2 million worth of the precious metal flows through the country’s wastewater, notes Bloomberg.
According to CNN Money, it’s believed to originate from the country’s gold refineries and watch manufacturers.
The research, which was conducted by experts at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, showed that in most places, quantities are likely too low to warrant retrieval efforts, reports The Verge.
However, the team does note there are some higher-concentration areas where extraction could prove worthwhile.
The research endeavor also revealed there’s about $1.7 million in silver lurking in Switzerland’s sludge, much of which comes from the medical and chemical sectors.
