The Vegas Golden Knights: Why?

The NHL is full of idiots and individuals that lack foresight. It's been proven over the past twenty-five years and it's been proven once again when they awarded a franchise to Las Vegas.
I don't see much good coming out of this decision, so I wrote these questions in the hopes that we can get some answers on why the NHL thinks this can be a successful venture. It probably won't be answered, but it's worth a shot.
NOTE: I'm undergoing a transition into a new job right now, so my work "rate" will be slowed down while I try to get myself prepared for it. Trust me, I'll try to get hopefully quality stuff out as quickly as I can.
