00:05:50There were some pretty mean kids in Butte, Montana.
00:05:52It was a mean place to grow up in.
00:05:59For one thing, the mountain behind Butte and the ground
00:06:01underneath it were completely honeycombed with mine shafts.
00:06:05You could expect any day for the whole place just to fall into
00:06:08the earth and disappear like the lost world of Atlantis.
00:06:13It was not a safe place to stand.
00:06:15♪♪
00:06:25♪♪
00:06:36♪♪
00:06:44It's no wonder that I became a wild man living in a place like that.
00:06:50I saw my first daredevil show when I was 12.
00:06:52I don't remember much about it except that it was, well,
00:06:55it was a guy got himself blew up with dynamite and another guy
00:06:59got himself squashed to death against a retain wall
00:07:02and smashed all over the place.
00:07:04♪♪
00:07:11You see, mother, this is not good for you.
00:07:13Grandma, what happened?
00:07:14I'll tell you what happened.
00:07:15Ladies and gentlemen, please stay in your seats.
00:07:17Oh, believe some man blowed himself up with dynamite.
00:07:20♪♪
00:07:23Grandma enjoyed this show a great deal and so did my brother.
00:07:26He said it was interesting but he could take it or leave it.
00:07:29Well, I found it to be a very moving experience.
00:07:32♪♪
00:07:35I never had any change, none at all.
00:07:37Any I ever collected I spent on fancy rings, watches,
00:07:40and motorcycles and ladies' pleasure.
00:07:43It didn't stay with me long.
00:07:44That's why I had to be enterprising.
00:07:46A boy growing up in good Montana had to be enterprising.
00:07:50♪♪
00:07:58How's she doing, Abel?
00:07:59Oh, hi Abel.
00:08:00How are you tonight?
00:08:01How are you doing?
00:08:02I don't know.
00:08:03I'm sort of edgy.
00:08:04Edgy?
00:08:05That's right.
00:08:06What are you edgy about, Abel?
00:08:07Things.
00:08:08You know, things that get you edgy.
00:08:10What sort of things?
00:08:12I can't talk about it.
00:08:13Oh.
00:08:14Hey, can I ask you to give Abel a drink?
00:08:16Oh, yeah.
00:08:17Sit down, Abel.
00:08:18Sit down.
00:08:20Roger, give me a scotch, one for Pat.
00:08:22All right.
00:08:23Scotch is a gentleman's drink, Pat.
00:08:25Now, what's on your mind, Abel?
00:08:27Something.
00:08:28Something big's gonna happen tonight.
00:08:30Go on, Abel.
00:08:32That's right.
00:08:35Something big's gonna happen in town tonight.
00:08:38Hey, yeah.
00:08:39You ready for another drink there, Abel?
00:08:41Oh, wouldn't mind.
00:08:43Now, what you gonna do, boy?
00:08:46I ain't gonna do nothing.
00:08:48I don't know where you got that idea.
00:08:49All I said was something big was gonna happen in town tonight.
00:08:55And it ain't gonna be the bank.
00:08:58I don't want to talk about it no more.
00:08:59I shouldn't have mentioned it in the first place.
00:09:01Now, where's this supposed to happen?
00:09:06Boy, that stuff will make you belch fire.
00:09:09Come on, Abel.
00:09:10Where's it gonna be?
00:09:11Come on.
00:09:12What you getting at?
00:09:13It's just gonna be big, that's all.
00:09:15Really something to see.
00:09:17Go on, Abel.
00:09:18Go and be the anaconda officer.
00:09:19Oh, hell no.
00:09:20Not the anaconda officer.
00:09:21I don't know what you're talking about.
00:09:23Supermarket, that's where.
00:09:24No, not the supermarket.
00:09:26I can't talk about it.
00:09:27It gets me edgy.
00:09:29Yeah, he's just full of hot air.
00:09:33But it's between here and the supermarket.
00:09:36I don't even think about it anymore.
00:09:37What time is it?
00:09:39About a quarter to 11.
00:09:41What time is it supposed to happen?
00:09:44Too early.
00:09:45Still too early.
00:09:47It's gonna be Conoco Station.
00:09:48That's what it's gonna be.
00:09:49I know it.
00:09:51You old fool.
00:09:52What's so big about a damn gasoline station?
00:09:54It's more likely the truck agency.
00:09:57No.
00:09:59It's getting warmer.
00:10:01Come on, Abel.
00:10:02Come on, Abel.
00:10:03Come on, tell us.
00:10:04What time is it?
00:10:05Just a little past what I told you before.
00:10:11It is time.
00:10:13Well.
00:10:15Hey, Rod.
00:10:16He's gonna do something.
00:10:17You better bring a bottle.
00:10:18Okay.
00:10:26We need a bottle.
00:10:27We need a bottle.
00:10:28Something's really gonna happen here.
00:10:44There.
00:10:45That's where it'll happen.
00:10:47So that ain't so damn big.
00:10:48Oh, hell.
00:10:49We ought to go back to the barn.
00:10:51It'll be big.
00:10:53Now watch out.
00:10:54Stay back.
00:10:55Oh, yes.
00:10:56That boy's a loon.
00:10:57That's what he is.
00:11:26There he is.
00:11:45There he is.
00:11:48Sure thing, Abel.
00:11:49I wish my old coon hound was here to see this.
00:11:57I have never forgot that dog.
00:12:00Somebody call the cops, this place is being robbed.
00:12:06Sure thing, Evel.
00:12:09Told them we had them thieves caught.
00:12:13Okay, he's going to open the door and set off the alarm so don't anybody get caught.
00:12:19What are you looking for, Evel?
00:12:22A heavy stick.
00:12:23What for?
00:12:24To hit the thief with when he runs out. I suggest you all do likewise.
00:12:28Did you get it all, Evel?
00:12:30No, I can't get the safe open. I need a gun or something.
00:12:33Here, Evel.
00:12:35This will do just fine.
00:12:39In there. The kid ain't moved since we caught him.
00:12:44You better give up, kid.
00:12:46Try out your gun and follow it out slow.
00:12:48With your hands on top of your head.
00:12:50You don't stand a chance.
00:12:52He's scared. A man will get desperate if he doesn't have a gun.
00:12:56You better give up, kid.
00:12:58You better give up, kid.
00:13:00You better give up, kid.
00:13:02You better give up, kid.
00:13:04You don't stand a chance.
00:13:06He's scared. A man will get desperate if he doesn't have a gun.
00:13:09Did he put you around back?
00:13:11No, but we ain't heard him leave yet. I ain't going around back without a gun.
00:13:14I don't blame you, Knievel. That's probably the way you'll go.
00:13:16Right.
00:13:18If you don't come out, we're coming in after you.
00:13:20And it ain't going to be pretty.
00:13:22This is your last chance, kid.
00:13:25Think of your mother.
00:13:27Somebody's got to go in there.
00:13:30Yeah.
00:13:31You got an extra gun, I'll go in the front, you go around back.
00:13:33You'd do that?
00:13:35Well, what kind of community would this be if I didn't?
00:13:40Knievel?
00:14:02Now!
00:14:07There he is!
00:14:09He's got a gun! Keep down!
00:14:13You hit, Knievel?
00:14:15No, he missed me!
00:14:17There he goes through the front door!
00:14:21That way! Down that way!
00:14:25Watch out! He's got a shotgun!
00:14:31Somebody else did evil in there!
00:14:55You want to get that thing fixed? It's going to throw me if I hit there.
00:14:58You're going to have to move that starting mark way back.
00:15:00You've got to be hitting 85, 90 miles an hour when you take off.
00:15:03The run's too short the way it is now.
00:15:05I want to move it back, oh, 50, 60 feet, okay?
00:15:07I bet you couldn't even walk up that thing without it stoving in.
00:15:10I made better ramps than that all by myself.
00:15:12First professional ramps were better than that,
00:15:14and they were only over two trucks, end to end.
00:15:22My first professional jump was at a broken-down rodeo.
00:15:25Well, they'd never even heard of daredevils like us,
00:15:28let alone seen them or anything compared with the likes of me.
00:15:37You better watch that thing, fella.
00:15:45Want a cheeseburger?
00:15:47How do you want it, medium or rare?
00:15:49Medium rare.
00:15:51You take it like it comes out, fella.
00:15:54Don't ever razz the man that's cooking your food,
00:15:56and don't ever send nothing back.
00:15:58You know, I had a man spit in my eggs once,
00:16:00and then tell me about it when I had them almost dead.
00:16:03What'd you do to him, boy?
00:16:05Don't remember.
00:16:07I never forgot them eggs.
00:16:09Want something to drink?
00:16:11Beer.
00:16:13Would you like some whiskey?
00:16:24Looks like you're used to it.
00:16:27I've done this before.
00:16:29Spent time as a drunk.
00:16:31Sour mash Kentucky bourbon.
00:16:33Best there is.
00:16:36You get where I am, kid, it's gotta be the best.
00:16:45That you?
00:16:48Yeah, that's me when I was 30.
00:16:51Women liked that picture.
00:16:53Two cheeseburgers and a Coke.
00:16:55Okay.
00:17:01Women liked me, too, when I was 30.
00:17:06Thank you, ma'am.
00:17:09You Turquoise Smith?
00:17:10Don't you know it?
00:17:11This your show?
00:17:12I'm the man you pay.
00:17:13Everybody pays.
00:17:14I mean, they own it.
00:17:15Outright.
00:17:16I thought I could draw quite a crowd for you.
00:17:18See, I do stunt jumping on a motorcycle.
00:17:20Boy, you ain't telling me anything.
00:17:22I've had some of the finest stunt jumpers in the world in my shows.
00:17:25I've had them jump over a whole pit full of rattlesnakes or lions.
00:17:28One fella did both through a flaming hoop of fire.
00:17:31Well, I do two pickup trucks end-to-end.
00:17:33Don't exaggerate, boy.
00:17:34I've been in this business a long time.
00:17:37Did you ever see Weird and Strange on Highway 66 in Arizona?
00:17:40No.
00:17:41That was mine.
00:17:42Went on for miles.
00:17:44Did you ever see Bowling Reptile Gardens?
00:17:46Two pickup trucks end-to-end.
00:17:48That's 40 feet, boy.
00:17:50That's right.
00:17:51Don't go bragging to me.
00:17:52Bragging don't look good on a young man.
00:17:54I'll make it.
00:17:55I've done it before.
00:17:57Think you can, huh?
00:17:58If I don't, it'd be just as good, wouldn't it?
00:18:00Better.
00:18:02All right, you got a job.
00:18:04$50 if you make it, $25 if you don't.
00:18:07If I don't make it, I'm going to need more than $25.
00:18:09Oh, wait a minute.
00:18:10If you don't make it, they won't come back next day, and I'll be out of business.
00:18:14If I don't make it, I kind of hope nobody ever comes back.
00:18:18$50.
00:18:19Win or lose.
00:18:20Do or die.
00:18:21$50.
00:18:22You got any, boy?
00:18:23Bobby Knievel and I'll build my own ramps.
00:18:26Hey, you forgot something.
00:18:28What?
00:18:29You forgot to charge me admission.
00:18:31Don't let nobody else in free.
00:18:33People are going to have to pay to see Bobby Knievel.
00:18:38Smart boy.
00:18:40Hover, hover, hover, hover, hover.
00:18:42Come right over here so you can try to catch the world's greatest cowboys.
00:18:47Hover, hover, hover, hover, hover.
00:19:01Hey, look.
00:19:02We have to go along there.
00:19:03Come on.
00:19:04We got the next stamp.
00:19:18Okay, ladies.
00:19:19Everybody try his best.
00:19:21Come on.
00:19:22Let's give him a big hand.
00:19:25That was four and a half seconds on that bull.
00:19:28Everybody try, boy.
00:19:31And now, I'd ask you to come on.
00:19:33How many you figure today?
00:19:34Golly, he's fast as a dam.
00:19:36A couple of hundred, maybe.
00:19:38How many yesterday?
00:19:41It's okay, fella.
00:19:42You got them rolling in.
00:19:43Don't worry about it.
00:19:44I ask you, how many?
00:19:47Quarter?
00:19:48Half only.
00:19:49Make you feel good?
00:19:51Yeah, it makes me feel good.
00:19:56Hey, kid.
00:19:57What you got is a crowd.
00:19:58I'm grateful to you.
00:20:00Ain't no big thing.
00:20:02Well, it's tough enough trying to make a living these days doing what I do.
00:20:05I kind of feel grateful.
00:20:07Especially with you doing what you're going to do.
00:20:11Yeah.
00:20:13Like something to drink?
00:20:15Afterwards.
00:20:17I wouldn't want to go out there stone sober.
00:20:20But you don't mind if I do.
00:20:21I'm going to have to watch you.
00:20:26I'm going to need all my powers of concentration.
00:20:48Come on.
00:20:49Come on.
00:21:17Come on.
00:21:37Come on.
00:21:38Get it.
00:21:41Come on.
00:21:47Come on.
00:22:03He's dead.
00:22:05Christ, Charlie.
00:22:06He's dead.
00:22:08How do you feel?
00:22:14I mean about the job.
00:22:18About as good as anyone can feel about that sort of thing.
00:22:22I mean, you don't look like you feel too good.
00:22:28What am I supposed to do?
00:22:30Have a hundred thousand people turned away?
00:22:33Have someone tell them,
00:22:34Mr. Knievel isn't quite up to jumping all these cars today.
00:22:38Maybe you can come back tomorrow and see him get smashed all to hell.
00:22:42When people are told someone's going to get smashed all to hell,
00:22:44they want to see it right then.
00:22:45It doesn't matter how you feel.
00:22:46You're just a participant.
00:22:47A splattery.
00:22:48I feel great.
00:22:49All right.
00:22:51I'd believe it if you do.
00:22:53You feel great?
00:22:55You know why I feel great?
00:22:57I have to, whether you feel good or bad.
00:23:00Nothing in hell would get done if you just waited around until you felt just right.
00:23:05Have you got the dressings?
00:23:06Yeah.
00:23:07Here.
00:23:13Oh, you better have Dr. Kincaid look at this.
00:23:15He's not going to like it.
00:23:17He says you can't jump.
00:23:18Shut that door for Christ's sake.
00:23:21It's shut.
00:23:24Are you all right?
00:23:27Five seconds.
00:23:30That's all it took Charlie Creston to get himself killed.
00:23:34Can you believe that?
00:23:38Five seconds.
00:23:42Five seconds.
00:23:44That's all there was to it.
00:23:46And I was laughing at him.
00:23:48Jeering, yelling out all kinds of stuff at him.
00:23:50Is he all right?
00:23:51He should have won for Christ's sake he's dead.
00:23:54Just don't figure.
00:23:56Get him out of here.
00:23:58It would have happened sooner or later.
00:23:59More likely sooner than later.
00:24:08Whoo!
00:24:16Ladies and gentlemen!
00:24:17Ladies and gentlemen!
00:24:19Ladies and gentlemen let me have your attention please.
00:24:21Your attention please.
00:24:22I know how you all feel about that bad spiel that Charlie Creston just took.
00:24:26But I want you to know that I just talked to the ambulance attendant
00:24:29and he said he's going to be just fine.
00:24:32Just got a little wind knock at him that's all you know.
00:24:34Don't you know it.
00:24:35Now what I'm going to give to you is any gentleman's gun
00:24:38in the whole history of stand upery.
00:24:41And when this young man came up to me and told me
00:24:43about the stunt he does with his motorcycle
00:24:45jumping in over two trucks hand to hand.
00:24:48I'll give you what you pay for.
00:24:49That's what I believe in.
00:24:51When he told me this I said I don't want no part of it.
00:24:54I don't want to see no young boy die down and get all killed up.
00:24:57No sir.
00:24:58And then he replied to me he said
00:25:00there ain't nothing a man can't do when he sets his mind to it.
00:25:03So I'll now give you the one and only
00:25:06Bobby Knievel.
00:25:07King of the most sickled down devil
00:25:09the weaving of the two wheels.
00:25:11Bobby Knievel.

00:29:16Don't you know it?
00:29:28Hey, did Charlie have anybody?
00:29:31I think he did have somebody, but I don't know where the hell she is.
00:29:35I wonder if I could...
00:29:36Ain't none of your business.
00:29:39I'm just trying to be helpful.
00:29:41Go be helpful somewhere else.
00:29:45Go be helpful somewhere else.
00:29:51This is some early national news coverage of me when I started my career,
00:29:56high-speed motorcycle racing.
00:29:58That's me there. That one right there.
00:30:10I've got one I live for
00:30:14One life then you're through
00:30:19Bet you're asking I'm gonna live all for me
00:30:24And not you
00:30:27You say maybe I'm crazy
00:30:32I say maybe so
00:30:36Who cares whether you're out to lunch
00:30:39And not my friends when you go
00:30:43So I'll do what I please
00:30:47I'll hang out in the breeze
00:30:51I'll just do what I please
00:30:54With the greatest of ease
00:30:56I'll do what I please
00:31:00I'll just do what I please
00:31:04Ain't got no R.F.S.B.
00:31:08Not the birds and the bees
00:31:12If I like what I see
00:31:14I'll do what I please
00:31:18I'll just do what I please
00:31:22Ain't got no R.F.S.B.
00:31:26Not the birds and the bees
00:31:29If I like what I see
00:31:31I'll do what I please
00:31:35I'll just do what I please
00:31:38I'll just do what I please
00:31:43I'll do what I please
00:31:51Bobby, don't do that. Stop it.
00:31:59Bobby! Stop it!
00:32:02Who is it?
00:32:03Well, hurry up. I'm being beat to death by this girl.
00:32:06She's hitting my wounds with this thing
00:32:07And I'm being paralyzed with pain and can't defend myself.
00:32:09You see what I mean?
00:32:13Fable, did you bring me out here just to watch you play with your wife?
00:32:17What's the trouble with you, Doc?
00:32:18You don't have any sense of humor.
00:32:20You take yourself too seriously. That's what you do.
00:32:23A little hard to appreciate it when you're part of a joke.
00:32:27What's the matter with the leg?
00:32:29It hurts.
00:32:30You don't say.
00:32:31Any fever?
00:32:33Any fever?
00:32:34Are you hot or cold? Do you have any temperature at all?
00:32:37Does that have to do with the broken leg?
00:32:39It isn't infected or anything, is it?
00:32:43Put your hand away.
00:32:49That didn't hurt, did it?
00:32:55Hurt?
00:33:01Here?
00:33:04Come on, that didn't hurt that much.
00:33:16Cindy, do you want to bring me a clean dressing?
00:33:29Would you like a bullet to bite on?
00:33:34What are you laughing at?
00:33:36It ain't your leg.
00:33:38I can't stand to have anybody laughing at me.
00:33:41What does it look like? Is it infected? Why is it aching like that?
00:33:44Because it's broken. Full of metal, you damn fool.
00:33:47It's all right?
00:33:48Yeah.
00:33:49Yeah, it's all right.
00:33:52Bring it back when you break it again.
00:33:54How long before it's better?
00:33:56I mean, if I don't splatter today, how long?
00:33:59I'd say in about two, three weeks,
00:34:01it'll be almost like an ordinary compound fracture.
00:34:06But you'll break it. Probably the other one, too.
00:34:10See you in the hospital later.
00:34:12You've got a great bedside manner, Dr. Kincaid.
00:34:14Yes, sir.
00:34:16I feel that building a patient's confidence
00:34:18benefits the entire healing process.
00:34:21I'll see you.
00:34:24Goodbye, Dr. Kincaid.
00:34:26And, uh...
00:34:28Goodbye, Dr. Kincaid.
00:34:29You stick with me, Doc, and I'll show you the Grand Canyon.
00:34:34Every man has to make his mark.
00:34:37Yours will be on the North Wall.
00:34:43What kind of jokers I got around me?
00:34:45Have you checked on my police protection yet?
00:34:48Sure, I always do that first.
00:34:50Well, where are they?
00:34:51Bunch of overzealous fans can come rushing in here and attack me?
00:34:54I could be killed or trampled, unrecognizable.
00:34:56That almost...
00:34:58Elvis was almost killed by a 14-year-old girl.
00:35:00She tried to poke his eyes out.
00:35:02God, that's revolting.
00:35:05See what that is? I don't want to see anyone.
00:35:13Hey, get that stuff to dry off the ramps.
00:35:15You know the stuff I mean.
00:35:16How the hell do they expect me to get any traction
00:35:18when the ramps are wet?
00:35:19Like riding uphill on ice.
00:35:20Oh, the powder?
00:35:21Yeah, I think we got some of that stuff, Evel.
00:35:22I don't know if it's any damn good at all,
00:35:23but if we can find out...
00:35:24Give me the cane.
00:35:25Look, you just put it on the corner of the ramp.
00:35:27See how it shapes up.
00:35:28If it's any good, maybe I'll give them a plug.
00:35:30I'll talk to them.
00:35:31Who makes it anyway?
00:35:32I don't know.
00:35:33Yeah, but I'll find out for you.
00:35:34You do that.
00:35:35Now look, I want you to stay here.
00:35:36I don't want you going out and getting kidnapped
00:35:37or killed or raped.
00:35:39I'm going to go out and check the ramps
00:35:40and see if they don't stove in and get me splattered.
00:35:42Leave these jokers and end up like Caesar's Palace.
00:35:48Where the hell are my clothes?
00:35:51One of the highlights of my career
00:35:52was my jump at Caesar's Palace.
00:35:54Now, I know you all heard about it.
00:35:56This was especially memorable because
00:35:58I broke just about every bone in my body.
00:36:01Excuse me.
00:36:02Excuse me.
00:36:03How's that, Evel?
00:36:04How's the bike sound?
00:36:05Pretty good.
00:36:06Real sweet.
00:36:07Put the new spark plugs in like I told you.
00:36:08I want new spark plugs.
00:36:09I don't want the quit on me when I'm going up the ramp.
00:36:11Can't stand some of the quits.
00:36:12One thing I can't stand is the quitter.
00:36:14And there he is now.
00:36:16The man in the white leather suit,
00:36:17ladies and gentlemen, is Evel Knievel.
00:36:19Who is going to make this
00:36:20almost impossible jump today.
00:36:23It's going to be almost impossible.
00:36:24It is impossible.
00:36:25Now, look.
00:36:26I'm going to have to get my own announcer.
00:36:28I want class around me.
00:36:29Real class.
00:36:30I don't want any more of these
00:36:31keepering sideshow freaks.
00:36:32Excuse us.
00:36:33Excuse us.
00:36:34I got the number two bike set up down there
00:36:36for the wheelies and
00:36:37you're going to jump the number one bike.
00:36:39How do you feel about that?
00:36:41That's an answerable question.
00:36:43I feel great.
00:36:44Great.
00:36:45I wouldn't be here if I didn't.
00:36:46Do you think I'd risk my life
00:36:47if I didn't fill up?
00:36:48Ladies and gentlemen,
00:36:49Evel Knievel.
00:36:50Excuse us, folks.
00:36:51It is my honor and my privilege
00:36:54to show you the most spectacular
00:36:56motorcycle jump in the entire
00:36:58history of daredevil.
00:37:00And that goes back a long way,
00:37:02ladies and gentlemen.
00:37:04Now, a lot of folks have been saying
00:37:06that what I'm trying isn't possible.
00:37:09There's one guy who said that I,
00:37:11I didn't know when to be scared.
00:37:13Said I didn't know when to quit.
00:37:16But that fellow was right.
00:37:18I don't know when to quit
00:37:19and I hope to good Lord
00:37:20that I never find out.
00:37:22I don't know because the word fear
00:37:24does not exist in my vocabulary.
00:37:27Okay.
00:37:57Okay.
00:38:28All right, all right, all right.
00:38:45Yes, we did.
00:38:58Man down.
00:39:05Man down, not dead.
00:39:08Man down, not dead.
00:39:12Open the door.
00:39:13Open the door.
00:39:14Get in the door.
00:39:23Right leg's broken in three places.
00:39:25Left leg in two.
00:39:26Compound fracture's all of them.
00:39:28And the pins got lodged in my hip.
00:39:30Pay no attention to him, nurse.
00:39:32Get him in there in a hurry
00:39:33and shoot his legs, his hips, and his pelts.
00:39:35Where are you taking me?
00:39:36You're taking me to X-ray?
00:39:39Do you have a statement for his wife yet, doctor?
00:39:41Well, he's broken his arm, his back.
00:39:44He didn't break his neck.
00:39:46I don't understand it,
00:39:47but he didn't break his neck.
00:39:49Just lie still.
00:39:50Don't move, please.
00:39:51Give me a lead shield.
00:39:53This won't take but one minute now.
00:39:55Dammit, give me a lead shield.
00:39:56Down there, I could get cancer.
00:39:58We can't do that now.
00:39:59Just...
00:40:00I could get sterile.
00:40:01Sterile, do you understand me?
00:40:03Give me a lead shield.
00:40:04Get the doctor back here.
00:40:05You have to lie still.
00:40:06We don't have a lead shield.
00:40:07I have to be protected.
00:40:08What kind of place is this?
00:40:10Give me your hand.
00:40:11There.
00:40:12Pay no attention to him, nurse.
00:40:14He's still in shock.
00:40:15Don't let it bother you.
00:40:17Give me a lead shield.
00:40:23Clamp that artery.
00:40:24Hurry it up.
00:40:25Doctor, pulse is slowing down.
00:40:27Don't let it worry you.
00:40:29Is heart beating good?
00:40:30Heart beat good.
00:40:33Look at those pins.
00:40:36Look how they held.
00:40:37They didn't move at all.
00:40:38Beautiful work, doctor.
00:40:40He doesn't appreciate a thing I do for him.
00:40:43I do good, beautiful, rugged work.
00:40:46All he does is try to ruin it.
00:40:49Look at the way those pins held.
00:40:51I'm going to put in the new ones just the same way.
00:40:55You know what amazed me about him this time?
00:40:57What?
00:40:58His arms and legs.
00:41:00They were all pointing in the right direction.
00:41:03Usually, they're all twisted around backwards.
00:41:06Swabs.
00:41:08This time, they're all pointing correctly.
00:41:12Just coincidence, I guess.
00:41:14Must be.
00:41:15Searchers.
00:41:22Hold it.
00:41:24One more.
00:41:25Wait a minute, wait a minute.
00:41:26Hey, nurse, come over here.
00:41:28No, no, around here.
00:41:33All right, now get in real close.
00:41:35Turn around, face the camera.
00:41:37That's right.
00:41:39Go ahead.
00:41:47What's the matter?
00:41:48Don't you feel all right?
00:41:49No.
00:41:50Why not?
00:41:52I drank too much at the casino.
00:41:54Well, why don't you take a couple of aspirins, stay in bed a few days?
00:41:57Maybe you ought to see a doctor.
00:42:01Get those crutches out of here.
00:42:02I don't want to see them try to get out.
00:42:04I'll be out of here in 24 hours.
00:42:06Well, you won't walk out.
00:42:08Last time, you said I was going to die.
00:42:11You will.
00:42:13Later, everyone does.
00:42:15Hi.
00:42:20No.
00:42:21Girls, I'm Evel Knievel.
00:42:23It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance.
00:42:25Hello.
00:42:26How are you?
00:42:27Do you want them just to stay here?
00:42:28That's right.
00:42:29I want one awake all times.
00:42:31They can take turns sleeping on the couch.
00:42:33Yeah, well, are you sure you're feeling up to it, Evel?
00:42:35I mean, we can come back later.
00:42:36No, I'm not feeling up to anything right now.
00:42:39But I may be any minute.
00:42:42I just don't want to be caught short.
00:42:43Do you understand?
00:42:44What do you think you're going to do?
00:42:46With a broken pelvis, among other things.
00:42:48Probably nothing.
00:42:49I just don't want to take a chance.
00:42:52Besides, it's not what I can do for them.
00:42:53It's what they can do for me.
00:42:55You all right, girls?
00:42:57Doctor, are you going to let this go on?
00:42:59Well, I don't run this hospital, and I don't control him.
00:43:02He's going to do what he wants.
00:43:04I just fix things whenever he breaks.
00:43:06You do what you want, Knievel.
00:43:08But don't ever expect to walk again.
00:43:24All right, now, Pete, I want you to get the head nurse.
00:43:27Tell her I got out.
00:43:28Call Dr. Kincaid and tell him, uh, tell him, uh, I'm in the parking lot and I've gone crazy.
00:43:34That I won't let anybody touch me.
00:43:35That I've gone crazy, huh?
00:43:39Guy tells me I'm never going to walk again.
00:43:41What the hell does he think he's dealing with?
00:43:43What kind of crap is he trying to pull?
00:43:47All right.
00:43:50All right, now, lift me up right on three.
00:43:52One, two, three.
00:43:56There we go.
00:43:57Put me right up, Pete, get the bike.
00:44:00There we go.
00:44:02Okay, now just put my hands down on her.
00:44:05There we go.
00:44:08There we go.
00:44:13What kind of crap are you people trying to hand me?
00:44:16Never walk again.
00:44:17Now!
00:44:21All righty!
00:44:22All righty!
00:44:24I know what I've messed up!
00:44:26There's no better hot water fight than me!
00:44:29You know, I can just fire a field of dirt down the road.
00:44:32Whatever the price, I'm going to make it.
00:44:34If not, I don't care.
00:44:35Believe it or not, I don't have no team spirit.
00:44:37That's why you never make it!
00:44:40You don't sleep with me like the 20 of me, see?
00:44:43I don't need any team to back me up!
00:44:47No!
00:44:48Pete!
00:44:49No!
00:44:52Dr. Kincaid always worried about me.
00:44:55Kind of worried Linda that he worried about me.
00:44:59I always worried Linda, too.
00:45:02Ever since I first saw her, she...
00:45:04Just didn't know what to make of me, I mean...
00:45:08I made up my mind that I wanted something.
00:45:12I was going to have it.
00:45:23Am I supposed to be impressed?
00:45:26Yeah.
00:45:27I'm not.
00:45:28I don't appreciate boys trying to run me down with their motorcycles.
00:45:34I wasn't trying to run you down, I just wanted to see who you were.
00:45:37Now you've seen.
00:45:38What's your name?
00:45:39Linda.
00:45:41Why, what does he want?
00:45:42Sort of wanted to know.
00:45:44I wouldn't even go out with you or give him my number, if that's what you're thinking.
00:45:49You didn't ask.
00:45:50Yet.
00:45:52I know who you are, Bobby Knievel.
00:45:54I know all about you.
00:45:55Yeah? What do you know about me?
00:45:57I know you've been in jail for one thing.
00:46:00I know you're crazy.
00:46:02Bet you don't know anybody who's ever been in jail before.
00:46:04No, and I don't hope so.
00:46:06Bet you don't know anybody who's crazy, either.
00:46:09Hey, have you ever been on a motorcycle?
00:46:11No.
00:46:12Bet you'd like it.
00:46:13I doubt that.
00:46:14Why?
00:46:16Scared of things like that.
00:46:17Scared?
00:46:19Why are you scared?
00:46:20So easy?
00:46:21I bet you could ride this all by yourself.

00:46:28I don't think so.
00:46:30Get on.
00:46:32I don't think so.
00:46:36Scared of me?

00:46:46There are other things you're scared of.
00:46:48I'm not scared of everything. I can take care of myself.
00:46:50Oh, yeah?
00:46:52Okay.
00:46:57Get on.

00:47:11I want you to slide in close.
00:47:14No, closer. Come on.
00:47:16I don't want you to fall off.
00:47:18Put your arms around my waist.
00:47:21Come on.
00:47:35You just set your turns up early and then you suddenly lean into them.
00:47:41Doesn't that feel good?
00:47:51Why won't you go out with me?
00:47:52What?
00:47:53I said, why won't you go out with me?
00:47:56Because I don't go out with hoods.
00:47:58Hoods?

01:03:33Nothing like that.
01:03:36Well, what is it then?
01:03:39I'm going to college, Bobby.
01:03:41I'm going to Missoula.
01:03:44Yeah, I heard something about that.
01:03:48I want an education.
01:03:51I don't want to be a waitress at the Mountain Inn
01:03:53and spend the rest of my life here.
01:03:58Yeah.
01:04:00What kind of life would that be?
01:04:02I'll be going now, Bobby.
01:04:07I just came to say goodbye.
01:04:12You can write me if you want.
01:04:14I mean, I'll write back.

01:04:23Yeah, well, maybe.
01:04:25I mean, if you're going to do that, you ought to call first
01:04:29because I'll have lots of homework and stuff, you know?
01:04:33Yeah.
01:04:35I mean, I don't know.
01:04:37You know if my daredevil show's passing through there

01:04:51Here.
01:05:06It's still early.

01:05:11Take a look.
01:05:12I want the door open anyway.
01:05:14No, no, no.
01:05:15Wait a minute.
01:05:17On second thought, maybe you're right.
01:05:19Hell, half the people ain't even here yet.
01:05:22Have you any idea how much money we're going to make?
01:05:27Sure be trobbing banks and filling stations.
01:05:30City hall.
01:05:32Better not say that too loud.
01:05:34Hell, the statute of limitations hasn't run out on that one yet.
01:05:41That was all right, though.
01:05:43Good-bye.
01:06:04Hello, Evo.
01:06:07Hi, hello, Bill.
01:06:08How are you?
01:06:09Busy.
01:06:10What can I do for you, Evo?
01:06:12you want some more money no no no no I just. Wanted to come in and thank you for
01:06:19that last one you get me you already did that you don't you remember. You gave me
01:06:24a stolen car. That's what I mean Bill I mean you being accused of taking
01:06:29knowledge just didn't work out right. Well.
01:06:36Sometimes happens. You know Bill.
01:06:42I feel so bad about that and I want to do something good for you something really
01:06:48good something big. The bank.
01:07:07I was thinking about the city hall you know with all the taxes in and everything
01:07:11I'll give you have a lot of money in the city all you just can't hotwire the city
01:07:16all know I suppose not thinking more along the lines of.
01:07:24Dynamiting it.
01:07:41The.
01:07:53Ship.
01:08:11And the only way I saw it was
01:08:14a job ain't done till it's done right. If you don't first succeed. Try and try
01:08:22again. I figured I'd mosey on down to the Anaconda supply house and pick up some
01:08:26more dynamite.
01:08:33What the hell happened. I believe a man blew himself up with dynamite.
01:08:41And.
01:09:04What happened here. It's all over Bobby I'm going to try to blow himself up in
01:09:09a toilet with dynamite. You missed it you should have been here an hour ago I saw
01:09:13the whole damn thing I saw the whole damn thing.
01:09:39And I think. I want to turn off I got that means you want any more they got
01:09:44something else coming I don't know about that I'm just going to get some sleep
01:09:48down if they want anything they can and you can tell them that septic tank
01:09:51ruptured to. Go in there till I get paid if you want to tell me about something
01:09:56else coming.
01:10:09All.
01:10:39I. Don't be robbing bank.
01:10:53Sure does what kind of life without
01:10:54a band running away from the law all the time hiding out like Bonnie and Clyde I
01:10:58could have been shot or something. And the nice thing is this is respectable.
01:11:03Here is. Able to keep me who's who I told you about look I don't want to talk to
01:11:11any local station plus a syndicated I don't have any time to tell my life story to
01:11:14some fly by night television station tell me not interested now wait a minute who is
01:11:18this guy anyway nobody is my local station. A local station in the city of eight
01:11:24million means. Why did you think of that to do all your thinking for you. I'll talk
01:11:30to him I'll talk to anybody.
01:11:51Excuse me Mr Knievel My name is Frank Laverty I'm with K.X.W.D. This is Mary
01:11:57Grover my production secretary. This is Richard Grayley my cameraman assignment.
01:12:02Would you mind standing over here for a little interview. Now with the rest of
01:12:06you people please clear away just a little bit given some room here. Thank you.
01:12:11Look over here please Mr Knievel. Right here right into the line. All right you're
01:12:15rolling. Evil Knievel take one. Evil Knievel is there something special about
01:12:22your daredevil stunts. I mean why do you think people have become so caught up in
01:12:26your legend. Well there's nothing special about the stunts matter of fact they're not
01:12:30stunts at all. You can practice the stunt I can't practice it. The only thing I can
01:12:36do is just take the bike up there and hope it all works out. Now I've done
01:12:41everything I set out to do. I've mastered all forms of dangerous sports. But well I
01:12:49guess the reason I keep jumping is the one thing I can't master. When I do 19
01:12:54I'll have to try 20. Why do you suppose the youth are such avid fans of yours. Do
01:13:00you think they identify with you as a sort of easy rider. Look I don't want to
01:13:06be compared with all those freaks that are riding motorcycles these days. They're
01:13:10giving bikes a bad name. I don't smoke dope. I don't need to get high. I don't
01:13:18need anything to back me up. I I'm high all the time. I get high on adrenaline on
01:13:25terror. That's right terror not fear. I get high on victory. Nothing like that
01:13:30kind of high. I think the reason that my pals kind of identify with me is that I
01:13:37I don't plan nothing. I just the way I'm gonna go I just go out there and do it.
01:13:42Is it true that you kidnapped your wife. Of course it is. And ma'am I just want to
01:13:47see you for a few minutes. Now you go tell her I'm here. She'll see me. I came all
01:13:50the way from Butte. No Mr. Knievel. I'll tell you once more and only once more.
01:13:57This residence is closed to male visitors after 10 o'clock at night. But ma'am
01:14:01don't you. Good night Mr. Knievel.
01:14:48Linda! There's a man in the hall! There's a man in the hall! Linda! I'm coming to get you!
01:15:05Get out of here!
01:15:10Where's Linda? Down at the end of the hall. Door on the left.
01:15:18No!
01:15:24Get on!
01:15:28You know we're not supposed to have any male visitors at this time of the night.
01:15:32Yes, yes he's still here. He's upstairs. He's coming down now. Send someone quickly please.
01:15:39Bobby we could be killed! It doesn't matter if you get killed as long as you're doing something you believe in.
01:15:50No, I'm alright dad. Nothing's wrong with me. I'm fine. State police. Businesses of theirs.
01:16:02Bloodhounds. You mean real bloodhounds? Bloodhounds.
01:16:06Bloodhounds.
01:16:08Bloodhounds.
01:16:10Bloodhounds.
01:16:12Bloodhounds.
01:16:13Businesses of theirs. Bloodhounds. You mean real bloodhounds?
01:16:18Bloodhounds. That wouldn't have done him any good. Never seen a dog at track and motors. That's a bunch of con. He's conning you.
01:16:23Quiet Bobby.
01:16:26Yes.
01:16:29Yeah, I'm alright. He's here. Do you want to talk to him?
01:16:34I think you better.
01:16:37Because we're married that's why.
01:16:39Yeah.
01:16:42Alright. Yeah, I'll be fine. Okay daddy. Bye bye.
01:16:52Why didn't he take it?
01:16:53He cried.
01:16:54And?
01:16:56And then he said good luck and he really meant it.
01:17:00Now that we know how he feels let's go. Let's get married. Come on.
01:17:09What's wrong?
01:17:10He cried.
01:17:11But dads always do that. Look, he'll get over it. Now you mark my words.
01:17:17You're going to be Robert Craig Evel Knievel's wife. You're going to be famous and he's going to be proud of you.
01:17:25You really think so?
01:17:26I think so and you mark my words. Now come on.
01:17:30Whether you like it or not Bobby Knievel, I'm going to take care of you.
01:17:35Hold on tight Linda Hanson. Everything's going to be alright and that's a promise. Let's get married.
01:18:00I've got to jump these cars for all these nice people so if all of you'll excuse me.
01:18:06I'll see you in the dressing room.
01:18:11Got everything ready? Do I have to wait?
01:18:13I think everything's all ready even if you think.
01:18:15Who ever taught you to think?
01:18:30Whether you like it or not Bobby Knievel, I'm going to take care of you.
01:18:35Stick with me Linda Knievel and we'll jump the Grand Canyon.
01:18:47Ladies and gentlemen, cars tangled back.

01:20:16He limps because he has broken every bone in his body.
01:20:20He has twelve pounds of metal in his limbs.
01:20:24But that does not slow or deter him in any way.
01:20:27Today he is attempting to break his own world record by jumping nineteen cars.
01:20:35Many experts have said that he has overstepped his limit this time.
01:20:40That it is absolutely impossible to jump nineteen cars.

01:24:39Elvis, Frank Sinatra,
01:24:41Wayne. We have a responsibility. There are millions of people that look at our lives
01:24:47and it gives there some meaning. People come out from their jobs, most of which
01:24:52are meaningless to them. They watch me jump 20 cars, maybe get splattered. It
01:24:59means something to them. They jump right alongside of me. They take the bars in
01:25:04their hands and for one split second, they're all daredevils. I am the last
01:25:11gladiator in the new Rome. I go into the arena and I compete against destruction
01:25:16and I win. And next week I go out there and I do it again. And this time,
01:25:24civilization being what it is and all, we have very little choice about our life.
01:25:30The only thing really left us is a choice about our death. And mine will be
01:25:37glorious.
01:26:01We're just one.
01:26:05Sell your soul to the future. Fortune and the fame.
01:26:13Off your status and they'll remember you as old. What's your name?
01:26:20So I'll do what I please. Hangin' out in a breeze.
01:26:29I'll just do what I please. With a brain and a soul of ease. I'll do what I please.
01:26:37I'll just do what I please. Ain't got no RFP.
01:26:46Like the birds and the bees. If I like what I see. I'll do what I please.
01:26:54I'll just do what I please. Ain't got no RFP.
01:27:03Like the birds and the bees. If I like what I see. I'll do what I please.
01:27:12Well, I'll do what I please. Yeah, I'll do what I please.
01:27:19I'll do what I please.
