This little tutorial shows a range of experiments and their outcomes. Where mistakes occurred, I've left them in and shown where they are.

However, it's a very interesting challenge to try to make this sort of thing work, but when compared to even a very simple bit of model-rigging, it's fairly obvious that traditional frame-by-frame animation is probably the only real solution.
