In an interview with '60 Minutes,' Steve Bannon said that the Catholic Church has an "economic interest" in illegal immigration.
Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon thinks the Catholic Church’s denunciation of President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, was rooted in “economic interests.”
The comments, made during an interview with Charlie Rose on CBS News' '60 Minutes,' follow criticisms voiced by Timothy Cardinal Dolan, who, on Tuesday, characterized the president’s move as being contradictory to, “the Bible, America…and human decency.”
“The bishops have been terrible about this. By the way, you know why?" Bannon told Rose. "Because unable to really...come to grips with the problems in the church, they need illegal aliens, they need illegal aliens to fill the churches.”
He continued, “They have an economic interest...in illegal unlimited immigration...”
The full interview with Bannon will air on September 10.
Though Attorney General Jeff Sessions did announce on Tuesday that the DACA program is being "rescinded," President Trump has since made a number of comments regarding how those affected can be spared from deportation.
In a Tuesday meeting held hours after Sessions' statement on the program’s termination, Trump commented, “Well, I have a great heart for the folks we're talking about -- a great love for them…I have a love for these people, and hopefully now Congress will be able to help them and do it properly.”
That evening, he said via Twitter, “Congress now has 6 months to legalize DACA (something the Obama Administration was unable to do). If they can't, I will revisit this issue!”
