Tony Schwartz, co-author of Donald Trump’s ‘The Art of the Deal,’ suggested on Friday that the businessman turned president may not be as rich as he claims.
“One thing Mueller will likely find: Trump is worth VASTLY less than he says," Schwartz tweeted. "More debt, less cash. He's desperate not to have that exposed.”
The prediction comes not long after the Daily Beast reported that special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russia's role in the 2016 presidential election and potential ties with the Trump campaign, has enlisted the help of the IRS' Criminal Investigations unit.
Vice News notes, "the IRS investigators specialize in prosecuting financial crimes such as tax evasion and money laundering and would have access to Trump's tax returns, documents the U.S. President has refused to release publicly."
In the past, the White House has cited President Trump's audit as the reason for not releasing his tax returns, even though the IRS has indicated that he is not legally prohibited from doing so.
Although Trump's estimated net worth varies widely depending on the source, according to Forbes magazine, it's about $3.5 billion.
