Fruit labels are not only there for scanning. These labels are also known as PLU code (Price Look-Up). If you learn how to read these labels properly, you will be able to find, if the fruits you are trying to buy are organic or chemically grown. These tiny labels or stickers contain codes that show what kind of chemicals, herbicides and fungicides the fruit contains. If you can read them, you can avoid them.
The 3 Keys for Reading Fruit Labels are:
1. If the PLU code begins with the number 8, it means that the fruit or veggie is genetically modified. Such an example is a banana with the code 84011.
2. If the PLU code has 4 numbers only, it means that the fruit or veggie was produced with traditional ways, in other words, with the use of pesticides. A banana that has pesticides has the following example of code 4011.
3. If the PLU code has 5 numbers that start with a 9, the fruit or veggie is organic. The best example of this would be a banana with the code 94011.
