A lawyer who oversaw ethics under former President George W. Bush has issued a mocking response to speculation that the Trump White House may deploy lie detectors to identify leakers.
Richard Painter tweeted Friday, “Kellyanne wants lie detectors in the White House? Try one on the press secretary podium. The place will light up like a disco!”
He was referring to White House counselor Kellyanne Conway who had indicated on Fox News earlier that the administration may be open to resorting to such measures.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Jeff Sessions also blasted leakers, saying on Friday that extensive resources were being spent to find out which insiders were giving behind-the-scenes details to the media and that criminal charges would be filed against those giving out such information.
According to Newsweek, “Their statements come following two major stories Thursday: the revelation that special counsel Robert Mueller had empanelled a grand jury and the publication of the transcripts of conversations between President Donald Trump and two foreign leaders.”
However, Painter’s comment also alludes to allegations that Trump’s spokespeople have not always been truthful.
In fact, he pointed the finger at Conway herself in an earlier tweet, writing, “But a lie detector on Kellyanne would blow the fuse box.”
Painter has previously denounced her for lying repeatedly and advocated that she be fired for “attacking Robert Mueller publicly.”
