2018 Mercedes A45 AMG:
If you thought the already monstrously fast Mercedes-AMG A45 was a little too tame for your tastes, the replacement model might better scratch your speed itch. Tobias Moers, Mercedes-AMG’s boss has suggested the new model could have in excess of 400hp – enough to make supercars of just a few years ago run for cover. Spy shots courtesy of MotorAuthority and our exclusive render lower down hint at what the new car could look like. Currently, the outgoing A45 features a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing a potent 376hp which, via its seven-speed twin-clutch automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive, help it hit 62mph from rest in just 4.3 seconds. Moers explains that this engine has reached its limits for power so the next A45 will feature a newly designed engine. When pressed to give a power figure, Moers instead responded by saying the team was aiming for an output in excess of 400hp and, if past AMG models are anything to go by, we’re confident the brand can achieve it. For the sake of packaging, the new car will probably stick to a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine featuring a twin-clutch auto and four-wheel drive but the crucial 0-62mph sprint could drop below four seconds – usually the preserve of preposterously powerful supercars. Elsewhere, the new A45 will benefit from the same improvements that’ll grace the new A-Class when it’s launched. It’s expected to offer a larger interior than the slightly cramped one of the current car, while the jarring ride quality across the range is thought to have been improved. The cabin should also see some enhancements including a less confusing design, better quality materials and – we hope – a replacement for the rubbish infotainment system in the outgoing car...

2018 Honda Civic Type R:
Peak power output from the optimised and refined 2.0-litre VTEC TURBO engine is 320 PS at 6,500rpm, and peak torque is 400Nm from 2,500rpm to 4,500rpm. It covers the 0-100km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in just 5.7 seconds and will go on to a top speed of 272km/h (169mph); meaning it is both the fastest-accelerating and quickest car in its class. It is also the fastest Type R ever around the Nürburgring Nordschleife with a lap time of 7min 43.8sec. The Honda Civic Type R has a new selection of driving modes, adding a 'Comfort' setting to the default 'Sport' and track-focused '+R' modes - all of which tailor the suspension compliance, steering geometry and throttle response of the car on demand. Compared to the previous Type R, the more significant difference between the damping forces of each driving mode gives the new car greater usability across a wider range of road surfaces. Notably, Comfort mode affords a high degree of compliance, coupled with a less urgent level of steering response...
