PM Modi calls for ending ''sarpanch-pati" culture

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for ending "sarpanch-pati" culture in panchayats, referring to the practice of husbands of women sarpanch calling shots. The Rajya Sabha on Thursday met after a month-long break, but the Opposition members created a ruckus when the government sought to give reasons for re-promulgating the Land Acquisition Ordinance. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday said he did not trek to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand to seek any divine blessings, but felt empowered once he entered the sacred shrine. After shocking revelations of the CAG of India about the dire state of management of Kaziranga National Park, home to one-horned rhinoceros, the National Green Tribunal has issued notices to 71 hotels, resorts and dhabas which have encroached into the eco-sensitive zone of the Park. Three policemen and a woman are among six arrested in Mumbai on Wednesday for the alleged rape of a model inside a police station.
