NEW YORK — A veteran NYPD cop is accused of killing a young woman while allegedly drunk driving at the weekend.

Vanessa Raghubar and her sister Maria were out with their boyfriends celebrating Maria’s 21st birthday.

Vanessa had just dropped of her boyfriend and was driving home early on Sunday morning on the Van Wyck Expressway in New York, CBS New York reported. Maria and her boyfriend Justin Harricharran were seated in the back of the car.

Off-duty Bronx detective Neville Smith was allegedly drunk-driving at the time and merging onto the highway when he rear-ended Vanessa. She lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

The 22-year-old New Yorker later died from her injuries at the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where her sister Maria is in critical condition, CBS New York reported. Harricharan is expected to recover.

Smith is also in the hospital. He’s been charged with refusing to take a breathalyzer test, driving while intoxicated, assault and vehicular assault.
