Nobody ever reads the terms and conditions before clicking "I agree." Nobody. They're connected to every website we visit, every phone call or text we send, every app we download, and every device we buy- but they're long, written in legalese, and often (specifically designed to be) impossible to read. So we just click. And since we've agreed to let them, every single day billion-dollar corporations are learning more and more about our interests, our friends, our finances, and our habits.

So we know our information is being collected- but exactly what are corporations and government agencies actually doing with it? We consider ourselves fairly internet-savvy folks here at Variance HQ, but this film truly scared us. The take-away here is simple: it's worse than you think, and you agreed to every bit of it... but at the same time, there are ways you can fight back.

In Terms and Conditions May Apply Documentary film, filmmaker Cullen Hoback uses fascinating examples and so-unbelievable-they're-almost-funny facts to expose what's being legally taken from you every day - and what it means to the future of both privacy and civil liberties.

You'll meet an Austrian law student who used a little-known European law to sue for his complete Facebook file. He got 1,222 pages back... and he'd only been a light Facebook user for about three years.

You'll meet the comedian who quoted Fight Club on his Facebook page and found a SWAT team at his door a few hours later. This despite the fact that he had just moved in, hadn't changed his address anywhere, and had a verbal lease.

And most importantly, you'll meet the people who are working to help us figure out what we can do about all of this. This documentary is one of the most timely films we've ever worked on over here, and we're not exaggerating when we say that after watching it, we went home and made immediate changes to the way we use the internet in our daily lives. Funny but educational, scary but honest, Terms and Conditions May Apply is what we would consider to be a truly important film.
