Carter Page: U.S. Sanctions ‘May Have Come Up’ In Conversations With Russia

A former foreign policy adviser for Donald Trump could not say for sure that he never discussed the topic of U.S. sanctions with Russia.
Carter Page appeared on ABC’s 'Good Morning America' Thursday when host George Stephanopoulos asked if he had ever talked with Russian officials about the possibility of then-candidate Trump easing sanctions against the country.
Page responded by saying, “Absolutely not.”
However, when Stephanopoulos continued to push the issue, Page conceded, “Something may have come up in a [conversation]...I have no recollection, and there is nothing specifically that I would have done that would have given people that impression...”
On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice had sought and were granted a judge’s permission last summer to surveil Carter’s communications over suspicions of ties with Russia.
While the publication acknowledges that no charges have been brought against Carter, it also says that “this is the clearest evidence so far that the FBI had reason to believe during the 2016 presidential campaign that a Trump campaign adviser was in touch with Russian agents.”
Page, a former investment banker, had been identified by Trump as a foreign policy adviser in March 2016, but months later, representatives for the Republican candidate tried to distance the campaign from Page after he reportedly made some controversial pro-Russia comments.
