Witnesses recounted how stunned they were to see the deadly plane crash in northern Pakistan that killed everyone on board.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-661 carrying 48 passengers and crew crashed on the way to Islamabad from Chitral on Wednesday. The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed there are no survivors from the ill-fated flight.
Witnesses of the crash in the Saddha Batolni Village said that the plane was hurtling toward their village.
"The shaking plane was flying toward here and it seemed that it would fall into our village. The pilot seemed to try his best to make the plane fly away from the village and then the plane crashed in that mountain. A fire broke out. There was a lot of dry grass in the mountain, so the fire quickly sprawled," said Qasim, a witness.
Some villagers immediately began rescue efforts after the crash.
"Many villagers arrived there soon after. People started rescue work and found the bodies. Without enough water, people used mud and branches to put out the fire," said Liaqat, another witness.
The fire was soon brought under control with help from the local army, according to witnesses.
PIA Chairman Saigol said on Thursday that each passenger had an insurance of 5 million rupees (about 47,000 U.S. dollars) while the airline will give half a million rupees (about 4,700 U.S. dollars) to each family for funeral expenses.
The PIA said it is investigating the cause of the accident.
