Adele managed to edge out Beyoncé at Sunday’s Grammy awards, claiming the accolades for album, song and record of the year in Los Angeles.

Amongst the glitz, glamour and hurried political statements made by artists, the British singer managed to claim all five of the awards for which she was nominated, albeit reluctantly, at the 59th annual awards ceremony.

Adele humble in victory

Adele said she “can’t possibly accept this award”, given how “monumental” Beyoncé‘s album Lemonade was.

The 28-year-old, who kicked off the show with a rendition of her track ‘Hello’, dedicated most of her acceptance speeches to Beyoncé, saying: ““The way you make my black friends feel is empowering and you make them stand up for themselves and I love you, I always have and I always will.”

She eventually broke one of her awards in half so that she could share it with the American singer.

She went on to thank her manager, husband and son for their support.

The night did not pass entirely without hiccups for Adele however.

During her tribute to the late George Michael, Adele, who last year had technical issues during her Grammy performance, was forced to start again after singing off-key.

She apologised repeatedly for her error, and finished the song on the second attempt.

“I’m sorry for starting again,” Adele said. “I can’t mess this up for him. I’m sorry, I can’t.”

The evening had its fair share of tributes, with many taking the opportunity to honour 2016’s fallen stars.

David Bowie posthumously won the award for Best Rock Song for ‘Blackstar’ and Bruno Mars performed a cover of Prince’s ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ dressed as the late singer.

Beyoncé, who already has 18 Grammies to her name, added another two to her collection, winning in the Best Music Video and Best Urban Contemporary Album Category.

The American singer who recently announced her pregnancy, was nominated for nine awards but her extravagant performance of two tracks from her album Lemonade, earned her a good deal of praise.
