Philippines struck by strongest quake in more than 100 years

A 6.7 earthquake has hit the Philippines island of Mindanao, killing at least six people and injuring over 100, 17 seriously.
The tremor’s epicentre, at a depth of 10 kilometres, was just to the east of the city of Surigao.

It is the Philippines’ strongest earthquake since 1879, although the archipelago’s location on the Pacific Ring of Fire means it has frequent tremors. Friday night’s quake has triggered dozens of aftershocks.
No tsunami warning has been issued, but there has been extensive damage to power lines and water supplies. A bridge and hotel collapsed, and many buildings have been damaged.
“My family and I were already sleeping inside our house when, at around 10 p.m., everything just shook. It was really strong,” said one man.
Many people spent the night in open spaces like parks and sheltered areas, and Surigao’s airport has been closed after cracks appeared in the runway.
